Hello, I have a question about my 97 Mustang GT that I bought recently. From what I have read, 97 GTs came stock with the non PI intake and heads. I don't know if mine was upgraded or not. I have also heard that the non PI intakes are prone to cracking. I looked at my intake, and noticed that it has aluminum where most stock manifolds are plastic. How can I tell if this is a PI intake and PI heads. Thanks in advance for any info.

If its an aluminum intake I would say its either a bullit swap or a PI swap. Is the whole intake aluminum with a twin blade throttle body?

The whole intake is not aluminum. The parts of the intake that are prone to cracking are aluminum, but the rest is plastic. I'm not sure about the throttle body. I'll check it this afternoon. Thanks for responding.

If only part of the intake is plastic, i'm guessing its an 01+ intake so it may be a PI swap car. Also some people have adapted PI intakes to Non-PI heads using gasket matching techniques. Its said to get pretty good gains.

Take a pic and we may be able to tell.

Yeah I say we need some pics. Never seen any other intakes for 2v cars other than the stock composite and the aluminum bullit, or aluminum PI intake.

well all stock 4.6L SOHC motors came with a plastic intake 96-04. I wanna say it was 01 or 02, that they made a change on the plastic intake that had a aluminum coolant passege or something on the bottom part of the intake, which was a cure for a cracking issue that alot of people had. Just that part was alum, not the whole thing.

The only alum. ones out are the Bullitt and the SVO intake (both from ford and $$$). Fox Lake is working on their p51 intake and a few other people are prototyping up some better flowing intakes.

Here is the best shot I could get. I hope its clear enough. As th pic shows, only the front of my intake is aluminum. The rest is plastic. I suspected that it might be a PI because the car seems to run very strong for only having what I thought was 215hp. I have never driven a later model mustang before this one, so the only thing I could compare it to was my 76 302 powered maverick. THat car dynoed at 245 hp and was much lighter than the stang. The stang is not quite as quick, but its pretty close.

That does look like an revised PI intake. Now the only thing to do to find out for sure is to put it on a dyno and see what numbers it makes, or try and find a "PI" cast onto the heads somewhere.
