Old-School Hurst Shift Lever

My dad has a 2003 Mustang GT, and being of the [older] generation, he likes his Hurst shifters. In July, I got a Hurst shift lever for his birthday, and he bought a rectangular rubber boot to replace the stock boot. Here are some pictures. He really likes it, even though it does lengthen the throw a little. At some point he's going to get a white Hurst **** to finish it off.

And thanks to Jason (evil capri) for his help with finding the lever. It bolts in perfectly.

It looks good and I imagine it feels good, however NOT for me. I hate the throw and am going same route as you with short throw.

I really like the Hurst shifter, and the white **** is a must. So far, I like it the best of all of the ones that I've seen. Back in the '60s and '70s, I believe that you could adjust the linkage for shorter thows - don't know if that is still an option. I had a Hurst shifter in a VW beetle and it rocked!

Tell him to get the "T" handle. That thing he has now looks like a milk dud.

That shift **** was only temporary and was off of his 1971 Dodge Demon (http://www.yearone.com/serverfiles/p...11AI56605&trk=)
Rest assured that the requsite white Hurst ***** now sits proudly atop the handle!

Hurst Shifter

Hey FlamesAreWicked:

Would you tell me more about your shifter? I have an '01 GT 5-speed. Ford changed the transmission that year. On the id plate on the door, it lists "K" as the transmission code (the newer transmission). If your shifter fits, let me know.

Nice!! I grew up with the old Comp Plus Hurst shifters so I've got a lot of fondness for the flat stick/T-handle. Here's the setup I put in my old '01 GT. Got the stick from Brothers and welded onto the TriAx lever. It worked great and got a lot of appreciative comments, especially from "age enhanced" guys like me!

That looks GREAT!!!

Mark, since you modified yours I have to ask, how did the throw on that compare to the stock shifter? Is it pretty much just like a tri-ax or somewhat diminished (it was mentioned earlier that the hurst seems to lengthen the throw...)

Just curious is all. Both look great guys

Thanks, Arin.....it didn't really change the shift action of the TriAx. Still worked great, but I'd still manage to hang the 1-2 shift every once in a blue moon. Just often enough that I never felt confident enough to powershift it. I'm a died-in-the-wool Hurst Comp Plus veteran and I've never driven a rail-shifted trans I liked as much as an old T-10 or TopLoader....I loved powershifting those boxes.

I really love the look of that Hurst handle... I may have to go with the Tri-ax/Hurst combo over the MGW just for that!

If you don't weld, be sure to get someone who knows his stuff. You need to weld the stick onto the back edge of the Steeda shifter, and you'll need to cut some off the bottom of the Hurst stick. Otherwise, your stick will be too far forward and/or too tall. I got the shortest stick Brothers had - it had a very slight rearward bend. I 'm not sure they still carry the sticks, but you shouldn't have trouble finding one. I just looked on the Martel Bros site and I'm about 99% sure this is the one I used: http://tinyurl.com/2nfq9d

Here's another view of the one I had in my GT.
Good luck!
Mark

I can weld, so I'm not tooo worriued about that. Though I did find this link earlier on craigslist:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/pts/287557911.html

I noticed the two holes in the hurst stick, couldn't I possible just bolt it up the the Tri-ax?

I found one of those too.. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pts/290108837.html

I figure If i line up the holes, or even just drill one new one if the spacing isnt perfect, I could do without the welding.

what do you guys think?

It really depends on where you want your shift ****. I wanted the look and feel of the old Super Shifter, with the short straight stick. If you want one that bolts to the Steeda shifter, you'll need one with a bigger rear angle, else you'll be running your hand thru the radio face. At the time I made mine, there weren't any sticks that had enough rearward bend while being as short as I wanted.

Jason, why is the chrome stick on yours bent whereas the others are just straight?

And I'm digging the oval boot

Edit: Let me run this by so that I'm clear here lol. Mark, you made yours whereas Jason purchased one prebent and all?

Hurst has many types of sticks. Mark is right about a short straight stick. Ones knuckles would be changing stations in some applications. Hurst does make some shorter straight aluminium sticks that I would like to try, but not sure I want to spend >$60 to "try".

I'd like to see the different types in person, as opposed to their website or catalog.
