I know this is off topic, but it seems like this is the only area that gets a substantial number of views...and I know that a lot of 2005 Mustang lovers are owners of other Mustangs...and I need help please!!!

My 2000 GT Mustang will not shift out of park! I've tried rocking..messing with the parking brake, and of course I know that I have to step on the brake pedal first. The brake lights don't come on when the brakes are pressed, however parking and hazard lights work fine.

I just had it towed home tonight. If anyone has any experience or suggestions here...please let me know. (I've looked all over the web...with no luck.)

Thanks in advance!!!

Sounds like the park/neutral/safety switch under your brake pedal is broken.

See if there's a real small (smaller than a dime, about the size of a fingernail) piece of plastic near the gearshift that you can pop out with a small screwdriver. If there is (a lot of cars with shift interlock have them), there will be a button under it. Depress the button w/ your foot on the brake and try to shift. Let me know if that helps. Good Luck.

And actually, that above mentioned name for the switch I gave is wrongfor an auto-equipped car. I just cannot remember what they call it on an automatic equipped car.

Who knows, on your car it could be built into the stoplight switch and they could be one piece. Are you certain that you floor mat isn't in the way causing the switch not to depress?

I was thnking the same thing. This over-rides the loackout on the auto tranny and lets you shift it out of park without depressing the brake pedal. Aren't all new cars supposed to have one?

hi Lee

this will help you drive the car , but you either have a blown fuse for the brake lights or you brake switch or a wire at the brake switch is broken (very common) But to be able to drive your car get in turn the key to unlock steering wheel but not far enought to turn on anything, then shift it into neutral then start the car , this will get it down the road so you don't have to tow it, this should procedure should be in your owners manual aswell. hope this helps

let me know

Mark...you're a genius! That did work!!!!

I did have the car towed home though...luckily our Roadside Assistance plan covered it.

The brake lights still did not light...I will investigate the cause in the morning. I think it is (hopefully) a blown fuse too.

Thanks again for the help. This is without-a-doubt...the best Mustang site on the net.

I'll keep everyone posted as to what happens.

It was just a blown fuse!

The fuse is in space number 41. It is a 15 amp fuse. (the small type...not the older larger type)

The brake lights are on their own fuse; so when that blows you have no brake lights at all...so the car can't be shifted out of park.

Saftey first I guess.

Thank again everyone for all of your help and suggestions!

P.S. If you want to download a PDF of your 1996 and newer Ford Owner's Manual, (like I needed to), you can go to:
