Let's Take a Moment to Remember the 2000 Mustang Cobra R



The S550 Shelby GT350 Mustangs are naturally aspirated, handling-focused cars. They kind of remind you of another Mustang, don't they? Perhaps the Boss 302 Laguna Seca or, going further back in time, the 2000 Cobra R?

Right? I mean, I get 'race' and all that, but goodness... it's so... Rice.

Still... Want. The car, that is, because of what it is.

As far as the Cobra R is concerned, yes I love it, despite the ironing board attached to its rump.
It was awesome for its time, but was rated at what, about 385 hp?
These days a stock 5.0 is quicker ...

 

After the 1999 Cobra horsepower debacle Ford under rated the R motor. Officially it was 385 at the crank. In actuality cars dynoed stock at 365+ with some as high as 380. Mine with a simple off-road x and a lightning MAF with tune made 405rwhp for the previous owner. It's not GT350 territory but it's fun as hell.

The only drawbacks of the R are the fuel cell has a lifespan of about 10 years or so and for the track the differential needs cooling.

And so what if a new(er) stock 5.0 is quicker . . . who the hell cares. Seen many a "faster" car lose to a decent driver mod . .

 

I like it so much .....I paid homage to it!! And yes the rear spoiler comes in handy at Barbers Motorsport Park, Road Atlanta and at 171+ (Back Straight at Talladega)
