I just bought a 99 GT a few months ago. So far I have been working to pay it off, but have saved up a few extra bucks along the way. I want to start moding it as soon as possible and just need a few opinions. Whats the easiest and cheapest way to get my car over 300 horses (not rwhp, though i wouldnt mind that)? I'm thinking of new air intake, intake plenum, underdrive pullies, maybe a timing adjuster, and eventually a chip. I also plan to get new exhuast in a little while. But are those good ideas or are their better ways to do it? Any pointers would help. Thanks.

If I were doing the starting from stock mod list again on a 99+ gt, here is what I would do in order:
  • Gears (4.10's)
  • Subframes
  • Magnaflow Catback
  • Dr. Gas O/R X-pipe
  • JBA Shorty Headers
  • Steeda Underdrive Pullies
  • Accufab Upper Intake Plenum
  • 70mm Accufab Throttle Body
  • Densecharger MAF to TB intake pipe
  • Open Air filter for stock maf
  • Steeda Underdrive Pullies
  • VT Engines Stage 1 Cams
  • Custom tune using SCT software.
That would put you seriously close to 300rwhp if not over. You'll spend probably 2k in those mods alone though.

If you were not gonna go the cam route, dont add the Throttle body and intake plenum and the other mods should put you at 300 at the crank

Thanks on the compliments. I'll be honest, after tuning and seeing the dyno numbers on my friends 02, i've seriously considered returning my car to mostly stock and picking a low mile 02 GT and making it a street strip car. With a set of cams I believe his car will be in the 290rwhp range or better. It will already outdo my best times at teh track.

Easiest would be juice or a blower.

Gears won't add horsepower but definetely worth it. Subframes wouldn't be on the top of my priority unless you go to the track often. The cat-back is good, but I wouldn't limit myself to Magnaflow. If you're going to go headers, go long-tube for a better hp/tq gain. I'd go with the 75mm Accufab plenum/throttle body combo (proven to give better gains). The intake and MAF I would wait until the end all together seeing as that I'm not a huge believer in this mod (CAI especially). I would also look at a port & polish job on the heads if you want the magic 300rwhp N/A.

If money is not an option, then I would also look into the new intake manifolds coming out for the 99+ GT's

Quickest and cheapest way to 300hp would definitely be the juice.

You can buy a solid, safe, warrantied Nitrous kit for well under $500, and install it yourself with very few tools.

Gears are always good, and I'd go 4.10's (like Scothew said) with a limited-slip differential on a Mustang.

As a simple, yet often-overlooked horsepower gain, just changing your oxygen sensors (if you haven't in a while) can really help out a lot in certain cases. Also, carefully cleaning a dirty MAF sensor can improve your air/fuel mixture, increasing your power.

If your car is an automatic, a chip should immediately move to first on the list. Even on a 5-speed car, a chip can really improve power and aid in gas mileage. But, on an auto, you can set the shift points and really get some extra use out of your tranny.

Hey, Scothew... I was just looking at a few pics on your site, and I noticed that your Cobra's build date just so happens to have been on my 12th birthday.

Sell the GT and buy a Mach 1, 305HP in '03 & 310HP in '04, plus all the other goodies.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to take all of those tips into consideration. The only one I probably won't do is the supercharger or nitrous. I plan on keeping my car N/A. The port and head polish sounds promising but do you know how much it costs or where it can be done?

Just get a safe bet like a Supercharger -- they sound ferocious underneath a gas station canopy and they give what, 30% + power?

Oh heck, I love the sound and that alone is worth the price
