I would start with a P.I. head swap. Best bang for your buck. 96 gts came with 215hp. 99-04 came with 260hp. Search craigslist for a set of p.i. heads.

If you're talking exhaust, I would go with a catback first. Then mid pipe and headers. The mid pipe you get will depend on the headers you want. If you want shorty headers the regular mid pipe is what you need. If you want long tube headers, you will need a shorty mid pipe. Keep in mind, headers are a pain in the you know what to install..

Headers really dont do much for a stock motor and are a huge cost and pain to install. PI swap would be alot better performance gain

H pipe is a deeper muscle car sound, x pipe is a more race car raspy sound. The x pipe would yield the most performance, but you wont notice a difference over the two on a basically stock car.

look through these explanations on exhaust parts from American Muscle. Pretty much tells you all you need to know.

A PI swap is the heads, cams, and intake from a 99-04 GT. they're called Performance Improvement heads

Pi heads have rectangle ports. 96-98s have round/oval ports.

Yea sounds like the PI swap is your best bet and while your at it get a lower gear maybe 3.73 or 4.10 and it will feel like different car.

I have an auto with 4:10s and highway mileage is not the best. But it sure is fun when my 60' is faster than a c5z06.

I've got 3.73's on my Cobra and when I was driving with a 50/50 city/highway I would get over 20mpg every tank... and that included the occasional spirited driving around town.

I picked up a set of pi heads from a ebay vendor for 600 bucks. I did a little home werk when I was rebuilding my 00gt the gains from exhaust work were not worth the cash out put. You can also call a few tuners and see what they advise. Call brenspeed<---- they know thier stuff. I like the gears idea relatively inexpensive and you can really feel the difference.

I agree u don't buy a mustang for gas milage but u gotta think if you go 4.10 you better be ready to shell out money for street n strip tires or you will have alot of wheelspin. I have 373 and decent tires and it will still spin thru 2 gears
