So my dad has a 65 fastback he just bought. I cranked it up today and it roared! Granted it has headers and glasspack mufflers.. hehe.

My point of this is... is there any way to get my 04 to sound similar? Every late-model Mustand I've heard has a sort of "hollow" sounding exhaust. I want my car to roar! So is it going to take removing the H-pipe, getting large pipes, glasspacks and headers or is there anything else I can do?

Or is it a lost cause and there's no way to make my engine sound as sweet as the classics?

Some cams can really make them sound mean. Also some long tubes with straight pipes all the way out back would probably be as loud as you will ever get it.

I want nothing short of the muscle car sound. And I know the glasspacks are horrible mufflers, I'm telling my dad to swap them with Borla or Bassani. So cams make a difference? Anyone have a suggestion as to a good cam for the car?

By the way, I forgot to add that the 65 also has Shelby side-exit exhaust.

Exhaust sounds differ with the valvetrain setup also. I can tell a difference between a 2V and a 4V at idle. Now imagine an old pushrod smallblock to a Modular 2V or 4V.....going to be an inherent difference there for sure.

IMO, the closest you'll get to the old muscle car sound on a modern 2V GT with cats is the Series 40 2 chamber Flowmasters. I had them on a '02 GT and a Mach 1. You would just have to live with the famous drone when cruising. I now have Borla and will not have anything else in the future.

Here is my Mustang resume:
'82 GT sold in '85
'88 GT sold in '92
'99 GT damage by tornado and traded in '00
'00 GT sold when the Bullitt was announced
'01 Bullitt sold in '05
'68 GT bought in '01, sold in '02
'02 GT traded for white '03 Mach 1, which was traded for a black '03 Mach 1, which was traded for the Cobra, which will be traded or sold in '07 for the GT500, which might lead to filling for a Chapter 11.

I had Magnaflows on the black Mach 1, better than the Flowmasters but not as good as the Borlas.

i think what he means is the tubular glasspacks like purple hornies.

bassani, magnaflow, turbo mufflers, etc, the "straight through's" all have some kind of packing. granted magnaflow states they don't use fiberglass, but its still some sort of packing.

whereas you have mac and flowmasters which are chambered and have no packing.

but when people talk glasspacks they mean the cherry bombs and the purple hornies type
