Engine Swap

Me and my buddies recently bought an '03 V6. What's the best V8 for a swap?

How much are you looking to spend? You have to use a out of a 99 or newer, you could probably get away with a 96-98 but thats not worth it, for it to be legal in terms of federal standards.

If you can get a donor car thats the best way to do it because you need EVERYTHING. Depends on the work and the money you want to put in.

We're trying to keep it as reasonable as possible.

I'd say a 2V 96-98 4.6L with a P.I. swap, I think because of higher compression they get more power than the original P.I. cars. My friend did the swap on his 96 GT and got 280+ HP from the swap alone i'm sure some minor bolt ons would put him in 300HP territory. Don't forget those 2V 4.6s love boost!

These motors are a dime a dozen and if you do the PI swap you can get one from any early GT, Crown Vic, Explorer and so on.

If you can find everything for fairly cheap, you can keep it under probably 3-4K. Keep in mind you need the whole drivetrain and the 4.6s especially aren't cheap even if you can find one from 96-98.

Not trying to steer you away, I'm doing one within the next year myself and have been planning to do it for a number of years and getting things in place, however just realize the undertaking.

If you don't need inspections/emissions, you could probably get away with a 302 or 351. You would still need a rear but could get away with the trans. If you do it carbuerated then you don't need to wire anything up. That would be the easiest swap, but not completely legal.

Aren't the heads on the crown vic and explorer different then the pi heads on a stang

I think the heads are the same, I may be wrong. I know the intakes are completely different. I think the cheapest and easiest combo would be a 1996-98 4.6L with the PI head and intake swap because of the higher compression people tend to get more power from upgraded non-pi 4.6s compared to a stock 99-04 4.6L. I have seen early 2V 4.6s sell cheap. The DOHC motors are overpriced in my opinion and are hard to find. I think the cheapest and easiest route would be an early 4.6 upgraded or a old pushrod 5.0 but I think you need unique 94-95 parts to fit in a 4th gen car.

The heads are the same and intakes can be used, but you won't get the same power.

If you go with a 302, you would also need a new k-member. The are a couple companies that make on to fit a 302 in these cars.
