Ok, I'm sure we have some people on the board who have Cobra verts. Here's my question:

I can see buying a Cobra, but why would you slow the car down by buying a convertible? They are structurally weaker, have almost no cargo space, and they weigh a lot more.

If I was going to buy a performance car like a Cobra, I certainly wouldn't want to slow it down by making it heavier than needed. Is being able to put the top down just THAT important?

I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm just curious. I can see have a Bel Air vert, or an old classic cruiser, but a sports car? Just seems like an oxy-moron to me.

Why get a GT vert?

Drive a 2003-2004 Cobra convertible for one day and you'll answer your own question.

I have a classic convertible and it's a joy to drive. But I have to agree. I would not want a performance convertible. Main reason: Rollbars are required in open track events for convertibles. If you're gonna buy a car with that much power and potential, and you want to take full advantage, you're gonna need a rollbar.

Since every Mustang Cobra convertible ever produced was built between 1994 and 2004, I'm moving this thread.

I would call it personal preference. Same reason someone would buy a v6 mustang. I think the whole point of getting a sports/performance car is for the performance.

The ability to have a sub 13 sec car AND be able to drop the top and go for a nice ride is priceless.

With a vert though, it wouldn't be sub-13 second stock. But you could get it there.

I know the thread was about cobras, but I figured since we were on the subject of Coupes vs Verts I figured I ask..

does anyone know the weight difference between the vert and the coupe GTs? I went up against a coupe (that I had more mods than) the other day, I had him in 1st and 2nd but he started to pull me in third. I assumed he was BS'ing me on his mods and had more HP, but I'm begining to think my vert may have weighed too much.

Thanks

Edmunds.com shows a 138-lb. difference between the ragtop and the coupe.

yeah thats probably pretty close i figured about 150lbs. and the main reason i like verts is nothing better than crusiing with the top down in a sports car. if i was looking for a pure drag car i would get oh......say a 92 lx coupe most people who buy a vert dont goto the drags everyweekend with it and arent trying to run 10's

oh, and for some reason the cobra is bought by like 45-50% older women who dont drag race at all

That's nice, Dr. Iven, but I just don't get doing all these mods to the car to make it faster, when you could make it faster just by having a hardtop instead of a vert.

I guess it all comes down to personal preference as Andy said.

Brad, my roommate has an 00 vert, and I just simply don't like them, not to mention the performance loss. Then again, I live in Michigan, and verts aren't too practical here either.

I could've gotten a Cobra coupe for about what I paid for my '01 GT convertible, but convertible season in Alabama lasts from February or March to November or December. The first winter I had my car I didn't put the top down from December 5 through January 11, and that was it. It was warm the entire rest of the year, and I'm not one of those idiot yuppie Porsche drivers who wear thick coats and gloves to drive their cars with the top down in winter.

Ok, so now we all know that you don't like convertibles. Most of us do. Point made.

Verts are awesome. I've test driven (don't laugh) two GT verts, one on a long drive (used car). Fun and you definately get noticed.

For me, I'm a coupe guy though. Plus, here in T.O. we don't have a good climate for verts.

I'm not sure I understand what a good climate is for a vert. When it's too hot, I keep the top up and either lower the windows or use the A/C. When it rains, I leave the top up. When it snows, ditto.

But on those days when the sun shines, even in winter, the top goes down.

Since I've seen a good number of Cobra verts on the street, I'd have to assume that those guys don't live at the track but just enjoy the driving experience.

I'd say the same is true for anyone who drives a ragtop, whether it's a Corvette or a Ferrari or a Mustang.
