Built Diff Clunking?
Built Diff Clunking?
Hey guys! This is my first post here. I got a black 01 gt a few days ago, 128k miles, and I've been loving it so far. Last guy had it 5 years and drove it 5k miles. He said it had a built rear end out a wrecked car with 27k miles with 4:10 gears, but I did the calculations and it has 3:27s. I heard clunking in the diff when I turn at low speeds. Could this be because this diff is "built"? It doesn't whine or anything when I'm driving. Should I be concerned, change the fluid, anything? Thanks.

Welcome Jake!
Love to Have you Post a New Thread in Introductions and Post Some Pics of your Car!

As Far as the Diff I Think I would Do a Service with the Correct Gear Oil for Whatever Style of 3rd Member or Carrier You Have. You Can Post Pics if you Like of the Diff When The Cover is Removed and We Can Help Identify if You are Unable. Noise in Slow Turns Can Be Normal in Some Diff's Like a Detroit locker. In a Clutch Style often Not Having the Correct Oil or Without Hypoid Additive May Also Exhibit Noise.
During Service You Can Also Verify Gear Ratio By The Numbers Engraved on Outer Edge of Ring Gear or a Count of Teeth on the Gears. Condition of Fluid and If Any Metal Shavings are Present Should Be Observed During Oil Draining! Pics Would Be Helpful as Well!
Noise Could Also Be Non Diff Related. I Would Get Car on Lift and Look Around Underside of Car in Rear Area For Signs of Rubbing.
The BUILT DIFF With 4:10 Ratio Statement By Seller Makes Me Curious! Especially after You Say 3:27's Quite a Difference.

Agree with KC on all of that. I'm skeptical on the "built" statement too. IIRC that rear would have come with a 3:27 originally which is what you came up with.
I've had one with a groaning like a dying whale in tight low speed turns. A little extra friction modifier for the clutches did it, but it was one that had the carbon fiber clutch pack in it.

Forgot to ask before, but does the Trac Lok work when you get it to spin?

I was thinking more of trying it under a load. Like a short burnout to see if they're both spinning or making any noises.
If your worried about doing that, at least get a buddy and try it in a wet parking lot and have him watch.
