Thumbs up

I've lurked here for a long time and found this forum to be informative, so I've decided to ask for opinions on ways to improve the braking performance on my 1994 GT convertible.

The brakes aren't dangerous, but the performance is less than spectacular. Rarely does the ABS kick in, even in panic stops, unless the streets are wet. I've looked into brake upgrade kits, but I drive the car daily and don't do any racing, just some spirited driving, and I want to improve the performance.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Daron-

Hello and Welcome.

Maybe a 'Cobra' brake upgrade would suit you and your driving.

There are various vendors to purchase the brakes through, and even some venders that sell used systems that you could purchase.

Example:

I have seen the Cobra upgrades and they're very interesting, especially at that price. Most places I've seen them are significantly more expensive. Thanks for the link.

I notice that the kit doesn't come with pads. Does anyone have any recommendations on a pad that will give good street performance and low dust?

Daron-

Hawks pads are nice pads. In fact I will be using them once I have a need for new pads.

And Ed-

The kit from Steeda is just for the front.

yeah, hawk pads work very well. good stopping power even with factory brakes. and daron, you can also try ebay, local classifieds or something like that to find used cobra parts. so many people are chaning their brakes on the cobras and selling their factory parts. oh yeah and WELCOME! :bang:

Another place to purchase cobra brake swaps is http://www.discbrakesrus.com/make/ford/mustanggtff.htm

Plus they have alot of caliper options for colors and style.

Would buying one of those kits be that same as say going to Advance Auto Parts and buying front and rear rotors for a Cobra and front and rear calipers for a Cobra?

Pretty much, but it also comes with the nessecary brackets that you probably would have to go to Ford to get.

Jason,
Thanks for the recommendation. Do you know if those Hawk pads are hard on rotors? I wouldn't want to buy new rotors and then have to replace them soon.

Scott,
Thanks for the link. I'm still trying to figure out the nuances of all my new-found options. Do you know what the difference(s) are bewteen the Steeda kit and the others?

I really appreciate all the help, you guys are great!!
