Axle questions

I've been recommended to upgrade to 31 spline axles, but are there different lengths? What is the correct length for a stock rear GT?

Any recommendations for axle brands?

This is a street car non-daily driver. 2000 GT. Thanks

Curious, but what was the reasoning for the 31 splines? Drag race alot?

Moser is a great brand of axles. You'll also need a new differential that will accept the 31's. If you contact someone like Summit Racing or other places, tell them your car and they should be able to tell you exactly what all you need.

How much power can you add before upgrading the axles?

My main reasoning was that since I'm adding 4.10s, I was gonna do the axles at the same time.

I've been advised to get the 31 spline. Is the 31 spline not a good street application, or is it waaaay more than I need?

I think its more than you need honestly. Even if you were pushing 400rwhp through a blower, on street tires in a street driven car, the stock 28's will be fine.

If you are planning on staying n/a and going with 4.10's, you'll be extremely happy with the stock 28 splines. The only time I would upgrade on a n/a car is if you are a serious drag racer and are running a full spool and slicks.

I ran the stock 28's on my car with slicks, 4.10's and nitrous. QWKSNKE on this site has run teh stock setup on his 93 cobra with 100's of nitrous passes on slicks, and even then with the D1SC blower he has. That car makes a ton of power, and he's been through 4-5 trannies now. On the flip side, i've seen a kenny brown suspension equiped Mach1 with drag radials break a stock axle on a really sticky track.

Its hit or miss, but for a street car, i'd wait untill you had a reason to upgrade.

That's great because 400 rwhp was the "max" power I was planning to reach.

300-350 rwhp is a more realistic goal. That being said $250 saved can be used elsewhere.

Thanks!

Next Question....what about driveshaft?

I noticed some driveshafts are labeled as 31 spline.....would this need to be upgraded also when doing the differential and axles?

The spline counts on the driveshaft wont change unless you change trannies. It will be fine as-is. Unless you want to upgrade to an aluminum DS.. the Ford Racing part has always been a top quality one.

Do you not want to get more than 400rwhp? Or do you think it's not possible?

I have a list of stuff I want, power related only, and I estimated getting about 600hp. Before nitrious, with twin turbos. But, that would require redoing almost the entire engine. Still cheaper than buying the 5.0 cammer.

A couple of things.....at 600hp you might wanna get a new block.

Also, I'm planning on staying N/A...........right now. N/A 400 would be an overestimate.

Also you could probably get an 03 engine cheaper.
