What Oil do you all use? Synthetic?

I am considering going AMSOIL, but I'm giving pause at the $5.00/qt price. I'm currently using Mobile 1, but they don't make a 5w20, so it's either 5w30 or 0W20 .. Any thoughts? My 4th Oil change is right around the corner!

I was told/read (not the I believe everything I hear or read) to use Motorcraft 5w20 semi-synthetic until ~8,000-10,000 miles and then switch to Full Synthetic. Mobil 1 0w20 meets Fords requirements. So I guess I will use Mobil 1 0w20, or maybe 5w30. I have some miles to go until I reach that point.

Personally I can only think of 2 reasons to use synthetic oil.

1. You're a "green" person and want to save on the Earth's petroleum reserves.

2. You want to extend your oil change interval to at least 7500 miles.

Here is a site I would trust regarding oil. Long read, but I think a good read.

I may try the AMSOIL 5W20 Synthetic.

But, I may go back to the MotorCraft Syn blend too ... or Mobile 1 ... I suppose in the long run it just doesn't matter much.

Good read indeed.

I stand corrected. Add the following reasons to use synthetic oil.

3. Improved gas mileage.
4. Enables engine to run cooler, therefore generating more power, and extending life of engine.

But you can bet I still wouldn't change synthetic every 3K miles like I do dino.

I used Mobile1 synthetic on my 95 Mustang. My dad got me hooked on it. In fact one time I changed the oil and did not notice but there was a hole in the oil filter. I drove 120 miles at about 70mph average to visit my parents. When I got to their house I noticed a funny smell. I checked the oil and it was empty. However, the whole ride my engine temp gauge read normal. I refilled the oil and drove another 90k miles before selling it. No problems. So it is always the same oil for me.

I've used Mobil1 5w30 and a premium filter in my 98 GT since the first oil change, and change the oil every 5k miles.

If you don't go by mileage, what is the max length of time you can go before a change? I know they always say 3 mo. or 3k miles, but I wonder if that is different with synthetic.

I am not sure how true this is, but I have been told 6 months. My wife has a 2001 Cavalier and she only has 6500 miles on it. So I make sure that no more than 6 months go by without an oil change.

I've always used Castrol GTX 5w-30. I might go with a synthetic when I get done with the road trip and before I put the car in storage until I get back for good in December.
