It will never sound like a v8. X pipe sounds horrible on a v6. You need a h-pipe. Magnaflow borla or mac will give a nice deep tone. Stay away from flowmasters and stuff like that. They are loud and raspy. The v6s can sound decent at idle but with the rpms up they will still sound a little wimpy

Hey everyone. I have a 2004 40th anniversary Mustang v6. I wanted to get dual exhaust so I thought about getting a catback system. But I need a GT bumper that has the two holes cut into the bumper. I have the stock bumper that doesn't have any holes it it. Would it be easier to buy a GT bumper and the catback system, or is it possible to get the holes cut into the bumper?

The only thing I was worried about was going over a speed bump or something and the mufflers hitting the ground.

You won't bump them unless you go over like a speed table WAY too fast (and if you do that, something else like your cats or fuel tank will hit before your pipes will). I had my MAC catback installed under my stock bumper and I have no issues with how it looks...in fact I think it totally balances out the car. If you want to go to the trouble, you can get a GT bumper...but I don't really think its required. As for brand, I agree with the posts above-avoid Flows. I did a TON of research before getting mine and chose MAC because I felt is sounded the deepest and best through the RPM ranges.

Also keep in mind that the exhaust will sound better with a CAI and a tune-I tried out mine with my stock air intake and stock tune and all the various combos and it is CLEARLY deeper and more "V-8 like" with the CAI and the tune.

I'm not all that knowledgeable when it comes to mechanics. So can you explain what a CAI is?

Cold Air Intake. It's the tube and air filter system that connects in place of your current tube and filter system for the intake. The idea is it is supposed to get 'cold air' that's not in the engine compartment, so you get a denser charge of air, thereby increasing power, as there's more oxygen to burn with fuel.

Although, technically, all intake systems, even stock ones, are now 'cold air', it's just how tuned they are to maximize flow/volume.

---

Just curious... why did you not start your own thread and start posting here? Just noticed it now...

About the cold air intake, I'm only 16 and I don't have that kind of money to be throwing around on parts like that. And I am new to this site, so I'm still figuring out how to do things on forums

You guys totally thread-jacked my man here... And i agred with the person who said you cant make your 6 sound like the 8, assuming you are referring to otherwise stock versions of both, and working with the average persons budget. You can, however, make your 6 sound better than the 8, or even like a modded 8. Like most things these days, just takes money.

You should be looking at full exhaust with h or xpipes, long tube headers, an intake manifold wouldnt hurt but not necessary especially if your going to boost eventually anyways. Not sure if high flow cats affect sound, but ull def need them with x pipes and some h pipes also. I would also go with a sc ovef turbo both because of low end gain and also its a better sound IMO.

If this is a street car (and unless you live an in area devoid of rain) I would go with a short ram not a cold air.

Ebay. Scrap yards. Craigslist. Lots of interchangeable parts whrn dealing with muscle cars.

I hve flowmasters i love them also they are mounted under my bumper as described i have no problems (using ford lowering springs for about an inch drop all around). Only thing is them going through the bumper looks alot better, but some ppl i know disagree.

Let me just say, I'm 16 to and I know how it is having to work for everything you put on your car. IMO it looks horrible having duals hanging under that v6 bumper. If you want to get duals get the gt bumper, or get turn downs. The x pipe sounds like crap on a sixer. The h sounds okay. A friend of mine has a 2010 v6 with a x and it sounds okay.... but it's a different engine. So to sum it up, in this order... exhaust (mid pipe and catback), tuner, rims, then lowering springs and shocks. I mean you will never make a v6 fast or good sounding without dropping serious money...

You don't need one anyway. The stocker already is.
