delete power steering?

What happens if you delete power steering? And is there pros and cons?

Have you ever driven a car without power steering? Haha

Yeah basically impossible to steer. Reason why I ask is bc the two nuts on the studs that hold the power steering rack in place is loose. Kinda weird

I drove it one time deleting the powersteering with a smaller belt, and I'm wondering if possibly I may of screwed up the rack if that's even called a rack but its the part that goes to the tie rods

Maybe this picture I found off the web can help, but see the stud with the nut? The whole rack moves sways when I steer, and you can tell most likely those nuts are loose... So should I just tighten those nuts up and it would be fine?

I wish we had electronic power steering

A manual rack doesn't feel like a power steering rack w/o power assist. yes it is tighter at really slow speeds but easier has you get going. I have driven 2 foxes with manual conversions not all that bad, get the thought of how a car feels with failed power steering out of your head . that said leave it for a track car no real gains to make it worth it .

What he said. Great for track car, not worth it for a DD. To do it right you need a new manual rack. MM also has a power steering setup that tightens up the power steering so it is not so spongy like it is stock. Thats the best way to go really.

But I wouldnt do anything to yours now, throw some thread lock on the bolts and tighten them and see how that goes.

quality stuff. I have their parts on my car.

Blackout Mar 27, 2013 06:36 PM

So with this part would you even need the power steering pump?

This is the kit. They used to have one for 96-04 as well, don't know what happened to it. But you get a new pump that uses less engine power and improves the responsiveness as well.

It was around 800 bucks a couple years ago, so I would expect to pay over 1000 for it.

I recently installed electric power steering in a 1966 Mustang. I did not use a kit, I simply pulled a column style EPS from a newer GM vehicle and then spliced the unit into the original steering column.

The results far exceeded my expectations and the cost was less than $200. I designed a controller that automatically adjusts assist level based on vehicle speed, so that the steering feel is "just right" regardless of speed.

I documented (with pictures) how I went about this on a Vintage Mustang forum. If anyone is interested do a google search for "Best $200 mod ever (EPS)"

or

follow this link to page 7 where the details start: [URL=http://forums.vintage-mustang.com/mod-custom-forum/787114-best-200-mod-ever-eps-7.html#post6037649[/url]..

Any questions just ask.
