My '88 LX had 230K on it before I blew a headgasket....I had a blower motor built to go in already so I swapped it out...took the engine apart and it was perfect inside...pattern hone....new rings, bearings, balanced it and put it in another car that has gone another 130K since then.

I've had 3 other 5.0's with over 200K on them one still driving daily with 250K on it....and I have 4 Mark VII's out back as parts cars that still run great one with over 280K on it.

All it takes is regular oil changes...

Agreed. Maintenance is the key to long engine life. On edmunds.com theres a guy who wrote a review on his 99 GT that has over 170k on it (I'm sure its way over 200k now) and he said it still runs strong.

My mechanic had an 86 tbird with a 5.0 in it that had over 250k on it. That thing was nice, I drove it a copule times. It just ran so smooth.

I sold my 87 GT with 187K on it, and the guy I sold it to, ran a 14.0 with it a week after he got it. Not bad considering the mileage. The engine went over 200K, and I never heard of it again.

Now about the trans, well that's another story.

yah, the trans is fine if its a daily driver for a mild mannered lady, but most fanatics beat the crap outta their car, so the tranny doesnt last forever...

I have an 86 GT, daily driver with just over 200K...for sale if anyone's interested. 200K is good in my opinion for being 20 years old. She still runs like a champion! Never been raced or played with. My 05 should be delivered in just a couple weeks, and I need the rest of my down payment.

Mine is an '89 GT with just over 73,000 on the clock. She is in great shape - stored indoors since 1998. I am starting to drive her quite a bit more, as the ball and chain wants me to get rid of it. She already nixed the '05 we ordered in December. I think I'll get rid of HER! Anyway, I get lots of compliments because you are seeing fewer and fewer Fox bodied GTs running around KC. Kinda like any other muscle car, too many get trashed, leaving only the ones folks are holding onto for shows, etc.
