I was reading a mustang magazine and they referred to the 80's mustang, I believe after the mustang II's as the fox mustangs. Where did it come from? I was into mustangs back in the early 80's ( Had a 68 and a 66 then) and the name must have come later.

Thanks

79-93 is refered to as a FOX mustang because the platform it was built on is considered the FOX platform. The 94-04 is the SN95 and the 05+ is the S197

FWIW - I also heard that the name "Mustang" came from the P-51 plane and not the horse.

Isnt that interesting, but since the ford mustang has a running horse as a emblem, it is highly doubtful

actually it did, the horse part came after. it says so in alot of mustan history books and in that article about the dude who made the first running pony tribar drawing (forgot what mag :bang: )

which is cool, cuz its also one of my all time favorite planes (along with the P-38J lightning(hehehe like the truck) or "forked tailed devil" as the ***** called it, the F/A-18 hornet and the F14 tomcat )

they thought a plane shape in the grille wouldnt make any sense
it was originally named after the Mustang though, but it one of the choices with other animals, not planes. Ford also named the Thunderbolt after a plane.

True the "fox" namesake came from the platform the car was built on starting in 1979. It shared this platform with the Ford Fairmontand Futura, and the Mercury Zephyr which were made from 78-83. The Mercury Capri from 79-86, thunderbird and cougar from 80-88, Granada and monarch from 81-82, LTD, marquis, Lincoln Continental and Mark VII from 83-86.
The mustang however was the only one to use its platform name as the body style too.
the 1994-1998 mustang is based on a revised fox platform that ford called the fox-4 (4 standing for 1994) Thus they are still regarded as fox mustangs.
The 1999-2004 stang is also built on this revised platform but with new body styling came to be known as the SN99 or "New Edge" mustangs.
In 05 the old was out and the new was in. hence the new S197 moniker of the new platform.

PS. The mustang was named for the WWII P-51 Mustang fighter.

Yup. even though its only slightly different the body IS different therefor required a new name/designation New Edge was picked for the name of the 99-04 stangs.

the mustang was named after the p-51 mustang but ford thought that it would be better to relate it to the horse.
