Timing question

Im making this harder then it is but please chime in. I have a 306 with what I was told has a B303 cam. I checked the timing with the spout connector out it was retarded 10but with the connector in its advanced 10. I'm suppose to read what the arrow is at right? With or without connector in? Thanks in advance

the timing should be 10* (before) btdc. looking at the crank 0* (tdc) the mark you want is to the right of the tdc. when you remove and install the spout the motor should be off.

Ok I'm going to check it again tomorrow. When I checked it with the spout out I pulled it when it was running don't know if that changes reading but it was at the 10 to the left of tdc

I'm not sure if what it does but I think its best to do it off. And 10* after/atdc is way off. I'm suprised it would run.

It idles smooth picks up decent not where I thought it would be. A friend told me today people that put bigger valves in and has the timing down like that prolly was using nitrous, but I have no idea lol

Your timing from the factory was set at 10 deg BTDC so that consumers could run on 89 octane. As soon as Hot Rodders got their hands on the 5.0 they were bumping the timing to 12-14 deg and sometimes even higher with race fuel. Now running 12-14 deg timing you will need to run a higher octane (92) . As far as timing being set (retarded)ATDC... I'd make sure you follow the steps for setting timing... Your car would be lucky to run with timing that far out- even running a nitrous set up , the general rule of thumb is 2-3 degrees retarded per 50 hp... So even a 150 shot at @ 9 degrees retard would still not put you anywhere near your reading. There are plenty of resources to walk you through step by step on timing.. I'd suggest purchasing a chilton or Haines manual ... Good Luck with the Stang!
