I know this is a stupid question but I never owned a 5.0 until now and the last owner did not have the owners manual. I was wondering what kind of oil goes in the 5.0 engine. 5W-20 or 10W-30?

I ran Mobil 1 15w50 in my 5.0 Capri(s). Not the oil of choice by most, but my last Capri had ~180,000 miles with no leaks, no burning, and motor ran VERY strong.

Opinions will vary, but I perfer Mobil 1.

Mobil one user here too. I use the 10W-30 High mileage type tho cause my pony has 120k on it, only cause my Probe GT threw a rod through the pan  , but she's alright now. I say use a heavier oil in the summer and a lighter in the winter that's if you're gonna drive it in the winter....I don't though and no self respecting mustang driver/lover should either!!!!

I agree with you twilight. But unfortunately, I live in NY and have to drive mine in winter. Some people can't afford 2 cars, but i'd love to, hopefully soon.

What's everyone's opinion on synthetic oil? (besides being expensive). My 2.3 has almost 130,000 mi. and i've been tempted to go with synthetic.

The brand is up you, but I prefer Mobil 1 as well.

The 5W-20 is the oil used in the 4.6 'modular' engines.

The 10W-30 is what is recommended in the manual if I remember correctly.

rule of thumb if its fuel injected it more than likely uses 5w30 (motor starts too quick needs thinner oil to stop dry start up)

and if its carbed put some 10w30 in it and if its winter run some 5w30

All dependes on the mileage. High mileage cars need thicker oil. Also the outside temp. If its winter you want to run thinner oil. Warm weather, thicker.
