So today (Sunday the 16th) I decide to do a little cruisin' down woodward in MI. 5.0's spotless, I'm feeling good; not really wanting to race anybody (haha that's the biggest lie ever, well almost...) anyway I'm at this light were you can only turn left or right....this all white 70's, think it was a 73 or somethin' Trans Am, pulls behind me. So the light turns green and i keep it in first going slow and then punching the accelerator half way then letting off just to play around cause my car is really loud, plus there's another light about a 100 ft. from the turn so i stop and I hear him hittin it a little. Now the light turns green and he's still behind me, I really don't think I have a chance so I go slow for like 3 secs. then gun it, drops back down to first and take off. He hits his and I just know he gonna pass me but he never did (thought he was playin around with me) Ok now we're on Woodward and we now are side by side so when the light turns green we hit it and I just leave him. Next light he says " That thing can't be normal" so I say "Yeah, it is...wanna look?" he just turns and laughs.

I'm now headed to a rite aid that has a huge parking lot where we usually have a little show every weekend and park. He follows. So I ask again..."Wanna look" so I show him and he's like "No way" I just got a new engine and it's puttin out about 400 horses, so I'm thinking that's gotta be a lie so I look at his and it looks like a new engine but I don't know about the hp. and the air cleaner cover says 455 or somethin in the 4's, can't remember(yes, I know that's representative of CI), but I'm sure it doesn't have 400 ponies cause I smoked him off the line.

What do you people think I think

I think you should consider yourself the winner because you were a better driver that evening.

I had a 1971 455HO 4spd Trans Am and it was a torque monster at most street speeds. Other fellow might have had a 1973-1974 standard 455 which is a much weaker engine and slow. He could also have a 3spd automatic-not much gear multiplication with the factory 3.23 rear axle. Might also be 3:08 for 1973-1974. There was a Super Duty 455 in 1973-1974 which was even faster than the HOs. Again, you did well.

I love my 5.0 and it is heavily modifed and very quick but does not compare to my old T/A in street lunges up to about 70mph.

If the T/A had a big chicken on the hood it was 73-74. If it was white with a blue center strip over the trunk, top, hood it was a 70-72.

I bought my son a '77 Trans Am that the guy selling it said had had a '69 400 dropped in it. Since it ran so strong silly me took his word for it. After we bought it I decided to find out exactly what motor it was and went matching up the engine code. It's been a while but I believe the code was C which meant it was a '71 455 HO. LOL, we paid less for the whole car than we would have for just the engine!
