To Resto or Foxrod???

I have a small dilemma and need your advice. I have a 1985 Mustang and two things make it stand out, one it’s an original t-top car and the other is that it is neither carbureted or completely fuel injected. Ford made my car (fuel injected throttle bodies) for only one model year and only for automatic transmissions, my Tuners advised against buying it in the first place for that very fact but I had to have a t-top car. Since Ford moved to full fuel injection in 1986, there are really no major performance parts for my car but I do have options, such as converting the car to carb or FI.
This leads me to wonder how many Mustangs are left configured as mine, when my Tuners inspected my car after purchase; they were blown away at the cars condition.

So, should I consider my car something slightly rare and just continue working on restoring the interior, forsaking extra power or just foxrod like I was originally planning?

Tough one. I'd mod, but do nothing that isn't reversible and store the parts for a possible return to stock.

How many miles are on it? I would keep it as original as possible. The Fox bodies are the next generation of collectible Mustangs.

It's got about total 140k but the engine was rebuilt, Seller never modded it with any aftermarket parts.

I think I'd have to agree with Walt on this one although personally, I don't think the car will ever be worth much just because the way the drivetrain was ordered. As far as it being a t-top car, that's a different story. You'll have people wanting the car just for that reason and they would probably mod it and not think twice about it. But, you know what they say, it's your car you do with it as you please.

I also have an 85 T-top car but it is a 5-speed and carb (last year of carb). It has 188k and I'm in the middle of modding. Nothing too extreme H/C/I, exaust, and gears. Things that I can undo if needed. But it is your car and do what makes you happy. After all you are the one driving it!!

Enjoy and post some pics!!

I'm sure I'll never sell, so even if it was magically worth something more than a regular fox, it's not going anywhere. I'm going to keep it as stock as possible, slowly change out the interior bits that need refreshing and that'll be it for the meantime. The engine runs so smooth I don't want to start messing with it until I firmly decide to give a crate motor. I will go ahead and put some black 03 cobra replicas but will keep the originals too.

I already ordered exhaust for the 2011, so I guess the mod revolution has begun.

Hey Brandon, if you go crate motor I suggest this one. I have the same motor, although mine is the 302, not 306 version.

Yea, that's the one I had in mind, almost double the stock hp, seems like the deal of a lifetime.

The setup you have was used for automatic 84's and 85's. The CFI is weak kneed and un-modifiable. Also, there's not much of a demand for it as a collectable. My suggestion would be to convert it to a carb, or take on the task of converting it to SEFI with a mass air setup. This will require finding an 89 to 93 donor car that you get all of the wiring harnesses and other parts you will need. There's also new CFI systems like Fast EFI that will allow a stand-alone system to run the engine. Systems like these are programmable and will give you much bang for your $$$.

What he said. Set the stock parts aside and you could still go pretty wild with the vast assortment of Fox/SN95 components available out there that don't require cutting up the car.

You can also do practicle upgrade mods, like 5 lug hubs, better brakes and suspension components. I don't think those would be viewed as anything but improvements...

The one thing that you have to think about is how many were made and how many are realistically left. Defiantly say that stock may be better in this case but that is just my opinion.

I started to redo my 85 GT, 5 speed, going to keep it stock, I ordered it new with a carb as I didn’t like the injection system at that time. It was build Jan 18, 85. I was told that they stopped producing carbureted mustangs in the fall of 84 unless special order. It would be nice if I could substantiate that but it is still fun to drive.
