Well, i dont know if you can bring them as far up as the benz is, but you can make some side exit exhaust. I'd get mufflers man, you'd get pulled over and maybe fined if you dont have cats and your exhaust is too loud.
This is a simple side exhuast system, looks like a NOS part for a 65 shleby, but it give you the idea of what i mean

I like the look of it too,but I've been in a 650 hp roush, and it had side exhaust. I didnt like the sound of it.It scared me how fast it was though!!! But i've been in a truck with a bigger motor and a HUGE cam and side exhaust, and that was awesome!

I like them FE big blocks(the 406 is THE defining Ford race engine IMO) with a "slightly" oversized cam and a 9.5:1 compression ratio, can't beat that sound!

You dont need exhaust that comes out after the front tires to make your car sound nasty. You can do the side exhaust like galaxie said and it would sound nice and look better (IMO) but some people dont like the way side exhaust sounds. I like it but you would have to hear it for yourself. Also, its going to sound nice but its going to sound as nice as you are expecting w/ a stock 5.0 w/ exhaust (from what I'm hearing). You should stroke, bore, and cam it. Than any exhaust would sound loud and nasty!

Not sure what the regulations are where you are but this is what they are in NC:

Everything that is factory must be there even though it doesnt need to work. I.e. you can gut the cats and put aftermarket mufflers on it but they have to "appear to work."

Cars older than 96 do not have to have working cats.

Cars older than 69 do not have to have mufflers.

All exhaust must leave the vehicle behind the passenger compartment. I.e. not fender dumps.

-----------

Thats pretty much it. If you could find some sidepipes with some good mufflers (flowmaster, Bassani, borla,...) then buy the mufflers and go to a local muffler shop and tell them you want side exit exhaust and tell them to use those mufflers. That would probably be the best thing you could do.

Not really. The thing that will probably cost you the most is the mufflers. I know around here muffler shops will bend tubing for you cheap.

Its just stupid not to have mufflers OR cats, just get a bassani high flow X pipe with just 2 bassani cats and long tube headers, with a catback, then it would sound awesome and pass emissons and the fumes wouldnt kill u

Be careful...you would probably make is sound "Nasty" just not the GOOD kind of "Nasty"....no cats or mufflers and just straight pipes makes it sound the BAD kind of "NASTY"....

There is good exhaust tone and bad....A couple reason I don't like side exhaust and one is that the fumes will gas you out in traffic. You can get a good sound and performance with a full exhaust.

You might like "loud" now but trust me....in short time it will grow very old, very quick.

I cant believe the stuff some people do, the other day i saw a 03 sonc blue cobra vert with off road X pipe and headers and i am not so sure he even had mufflers. It was screaming at 2k rpm, i bet that thing could blow your ear drums at 5 grand with the top down.

I've seen a trend of local "kids"(loosely used term because they are young) with new Mustangs that just remove the mufflers.....the cars sound AWFUL....they crackle and pop and sound like a wounded Elk or other wounded creature screaming in pain!

On our 93 LX we have bbk shorty headers, 2.5" off road H pipe, flowmasters 40s, and mac axle backs. The car sound goods and it smells good (well with leaded gas anyways) and if it perfect for just city driving. You get a lot of looks in it but the sound isnt enough to drive you nuts (except for it in 4-5K rpms, the FMs drown out and it is a pain).

Zach, I think SVOPaul has an excellent point. A full exhaust can be made to sound excellent without spending a heap of change and having it sound just god awful loud.

Remeber Zach, you must pass emissions or you won't be making any sound with your Stang at all Go legal and don't take a chance

Loud = longtube headers, mac prochamber, single chamber mufflers (either mac or flowmaster) and a set of dumps. You will have a sericously LOUD exhaust but still have a decent tone to it.
