Well my good buddy Scott has an auto '91 LX hatch. He's got a pretty nice ride. All he's got done is a K&N Filter, and a catback system. I looked up the stock hp on TMS.com and it said 225, is that not correct? He keeps telling me it's 245 stock. He claims 285 hp with his mods which I've told him is way to much. He swears he's correct and says "believe what you want." I'm about ready to tell him to put that thing on a dyno and if he's correct I'll pay for the costs of it.

Last weekend he raced an LT1 Z28 with 2 people in it. It was most likely an auto. He won, and he keeps telling me Z28's never came with an LT1 and that they're all LS1's, and he can beat LS1's. Which to me is very laughable because that's as if he's trying to say he could give me a run, which he knows he can't. He doesn't know that Pre97 Z28's were all LT1's and had the boxy headlights which is what he raced, I know that for a fact. He refuses to listen. I hate to kind of disrespect him by posting this on the internet I just wanted to get some 5.0 guys to please set the record straight.

The 5.0s came with 225 horsepower from Ford. Wether or no that is just what ford rated it at or if thats what it actually produced I dont know.

They were apparently 225 from the factory, like you said. Some people say that is overrated, and with only an exhaust and a filter id say he'd be lucky to be making 235hp at the flywheel now, being that the car is 15 years old. Probably 200rwhp with the auto.

And you're right about the LT1/LS1 thing except that the 97 Z28s had the LT1 also, not pre97s (not that it really matters). 275hp in the Z28.

Tell him to smarten up or else take him for a run.

My 1993 made 210 I believe with catback, headers, and kn filter, but that was through a 5 speed. I would guess 190 to 200 through the slushbox.

He probably could hang with a stock, aod lt1 they just werent all that quick. However, a even decent ls1 would flat walk him down the 1/4. Sorry, but as far as out of the box power, the ls1's were sweet. Throw on a bottle, and slicks, and IF the rear end holds together you gonna have some really decent times.

He won't run me, he knows I'll win. He underestimates the LS1 platform.

There is a very simple way to settle the whole thing. Put his car on the dyno to get the real numbers and then race to see who is faster.

A dyno can be a very sobering experience for people like this. Unfortunately your friend is incorrect and needs a dose of Dyno time in order to kill his pipe dream. 225 at the flywheel is the original HP numbers.....I have run into people like this before and you can't tell them anything...they know it all and they think they can run 203MPH all day long. I have a local Chevy guy with an '85 IROC that comes by my shop exactly like this and he gets his feelings hurt every time he comes by and when we go to the track. It started out 2 1/2 years ago when he claimed to run 12's in the 1/4 and we took 3 near stock Lincoln Mark VII's up to the track and ran 15's while he ran 16's in the quarter. I told him I wouldn't even start my supercharged LX until he could be the slow Lincolns....Now 2 1/2 years later he is finally running 13's but still talking smack like he is making 1000HP.....he will never learn so we will just continue to hurt his feelings when he comes by.

He also got his pride killed a few days ago when he came up against a friend of mine in an all wheel drive turbocharged Mazda 323....the 323 pulled 8 car lengths on him in 1st gear.....he still hasn't changed.

Some people you just can't reach.....

High Ofcourse this is what he "said"...I haven't witnessed anything but a high 14 second pass from that car first hand...

Well he finally admits it's an LT1 and he's saying that the LT1 is 290 horsepower so he has to be correct about the horespower. I pointed out the power to weight ratio. He had no passengers, the other car had 1, and the maro is heavier. He just won't listen. How do you think a spin on the dyno would cost?

Around here you pay $60 for 3 pulls on the dyno which includes giving you time to make some adjustments.
