I don't think you can tell if it was a real GT by the code alone... a well made GT clone will be indistinguishable from a real GT. Just make sure it wasn't a 2.3 conversion and you should be good. From that time period, a LX5.0 and a GT are basically the same car except for the ground effects, fog lights, etc. LX 5.0's came with all season tires, GT's didn't, though I seriously doubt the tires are original.
