Hey everyone,

I have a 1985 GT, obviously with the carbureted version of the 5.0, with a manual tranny. I purchased the car used and the guy before me messed with the timing. I think he advanced it quite a bit but I'm not sure.

Does anyone know what the stock timing is for those cars? Or maybe for any 85 GT for that matter?

I am just trying to get it back to stock, the timing that is, because the car is running a little hot and I know that timing could be affecting that.

I already replaced the thermostat and all of the radiator hoses. The radiator is fine too. I am running down my list of eliminating things that could be causing the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With the spout removed stock timing would be 10 degrees....most people tweak them upwards of 14-15 depending on when detonation sets in.

Just one question. What do you mean when you say "With the spout removed...."? What is the spout?

When you set the timing you remove the "spout" which is a small plug in the harness near the distributor. When finished you reinstall it...it should be either a grey or black small rectangular plug.

did the 85's have the spout since they didnt have EFI??? i have never looked at my sisters distributor to see if there was one.

 

Good point....it has been so long since I had my '85 that I don't remember exactly. If it was an Auto car it probably would but the 5 speed may not...

 

as long as the timing isnt way off it wont run hot. but if the timing was that off it probably wouldnt run. unfortunatly the thermostats even the new ones have a problem of not working properly. especially if you put them in backwars like i did once might be a water pump causing it to over heat. they are famous for failing once they get some miles on them
