John-

We need a little more information to make an educated guess on fair selling price . . . and pictures would also help.

As far as the Speedo . . .yes the car will go faster than 85mph.

"those books are full of it" -Exactly
what are the options, and Never ever believe n-e thing people tell u about a car doing exactly what the speedo says. If i put 320mph speedo on a HunDuh Civic it ain't gonna do that. The stock 5.0 should run up into the mid 130 mph zone. (with a 5 speed) The car if it is in good shape and is stock I would offer em 1000 and if they say no go up in 50 dollar increments till they say yes, but only pay more if all else fails. Do u like red interior, if not u should change it out to grey from a wrecked or junked car.

Good Luck!!!!!

pics would be nice. that sounds like a good deal to me, but only b/c used car dealers overcharge here. can u beleive $6995 for an 89 LX 5.0 w/ chipped paint and a hole in the middle of the rear bumper. it was an ok car, but not worth more n $1000 IMO. but hey if you got that $1500, start at a lower offer n work ur way up. listen for clunkn when u test drive n make sure there was no abuse...

The top speed will be affected by 5-10 mph most likely, due to the weight of the AOD (POS) I would swap for a 5 speed. The AODs weight and gearing is much different than that of a 5 speed. To give u a weight idea, a 2005 mustang with every option except the auto and another with all the same including and auto, The automatic equiped stang weighs 450 more pounds then the 5 speed.

You lose some top end but can make up with minor tweaks like a cam or headers, free flow cats ,gear change, etc.
an automatic aod will rob about 30hp in hp needed to power it and about 10 hp in weight.

Old rule of thumb I used was 10 hp= 100 lbs = 1/10th sec. which equates to every 10 hp added or 100 lbs removed equals 1/10th sec in 1/4 mile.

Best guess
87 gt auto 2.73 rear approx 137 top
man 141 top

I think you got a good deal. The top speed diff is negligible. You won't notice it.

I had a Black 87 GT, and loved every minute of of it.
