Hey guys, if you could stroke your stock 302 block, what size would you stroke it to? Personally I'd choose the 347, Nathan

...to as many cubic inches as I could afford.

Did that sound obscene or was it just me?

Since I prefer Longevity, I prefer the 331 out of a 302 block....done both 331 and 347.

If one plans to supercharge, are you still in favor of the 331?

Do the past oil problems in the 347 concern you with regard to longevity?

Yes....definitely. We built a 331 last year with dart sr. heads and a Vortech S trim that made 507 rwhp/496 ft. lbs torque. We replaced a N/A 347 with that combo. The 347 makes good power but it will not last 100K and usually needs freshening at 60-70K if not raced regularly...it's just tough on the 302 block. I also took a standard bore 302 in my LX with GT40 P heads and a Vortech S trim and made 413 rwhp/ 484.6 ft. lbs of torque.....both setups...no exotic parts used(heads, intake, etc). We are now in the process of building a '93 Cobra for a customer and will be using a 331 with Vortech...this time we are going to probably use AFR 185 heads....he wants 450 rwhp....we are going to have a hard time keeping it that low and will probably have to turn the boost down a bit. I've never seen a 347 live as long as a 331 over the past years....it's easy to make power with the right parts/combination but you also have to factor in your useage for the combo...most of my customers drive their cars and they are not dedicated race cars so they want reliability and longevity.

Yea IMO if I were to build a street car I would go with either a DSS 331 all motor or a 306 turbo. They both would be something that would be reliable and not too bad on the pockets with gas. I mean, they wouldnt be like a Hybrid Civic but they would be bearabel. Theres nothing worse in the world than paying to fill ur tank every day n a half.

If anyone is curious as to how the 95 that SVOPaul built, here is a vid clip of it running at the shop. This vid does not do the car any justice, this thing sounded like a pissed off gorilla beating on steel drums when coming down the road.

Paul why didnt you kick my tail when I had the chance to trade my car for this one cause the owner was scared of its power :bang:

For the official record a 306 IS NOT a stroker....it is merely a .030 over 302.

Scothew, I will kick you the next time I see you

I wasn't just picking on you .....I hear this all the time where people refer to a 306 like its a stroker....you just happened to fall into the line of fire with that correction

boring is using a machine to cut the cylinder walls larger to fit bigger pistons....this is done to clean up a block during a rebuild for different reasons but mostly because of wear on the cylinder walls.

Stroking is increasing the length of the connecting rod...this requires clearancing of the block...when a rod rotates on the crank shaft is is considered the "stroke" so by increasing the length of the connecting rod you are increasing the "stroke" of the engine...hence the term "Stroking" or "stroker". Most of the stroker kits do require you to bore the cylinders.

whatever paul, we all know that engine stroking is when you have the engine on the stand, and you gentely caress it each night before you leave the shop.
