Crazy Transmission Noise?!

I am sure this has been talked about somewhere, but I wasn't able to find it...

The tranny in my '89 5 liter has started to whir/whine quite loud in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, especially at town driving speeds. I am wondering if this is the begining of the end for it.

If that turns out to be the case, does anyone have recomendations about what route to go? Should I just re-build it, is there a beefy re-build kit or a tougher tranny I should look into? any info would be awsome.

Thanks

Have you checked or changed the fluid? Often a cause for noise and failure....

If that checks out OK then rebuild it before it lets go...otherwise you may have a paperweight and be forced to buy a new one...

i dont think ull need a know one.. the tranny went on my friends recently and he just rebuilt it with heavy duty parts.. cost about 1500 or something around there but they said it will be able to take double if not triple the beating this time around... so look into rebuilding it with heavier duty parts

I took it to the shop today, turns out there may be some rear end problems too - it's whining. Also, today I was having problems getting it to go from 5th down to 4th.

Any guess's on what I should pay for a used rear end?

Why buy a used rear-end that will have the same problems when you can rebuild your current rear-end with fresh, new parts?

It seams now that I need a new tranny - it's on its last life, and to add to it all, my left rear axle is bent! Up on the hoist the left rear wobbled all over the place! but some good news came for me, the rear diff isn't as bad as first thought - it just needs a seal.
