If it still has the original engine in it, you will need a flat tappet cam. Compcams.com has a tool to help you pick out a cam and can even custom grind one for you.

i would not install a cam unless you are doing intake and heads. because the only thing you will gain is a cool lope. you will proabably even loose power.

^^^ +1 on doing heads, cam and intake as a total performance upgrade package. Might as well pick up a roller cam block if your engine uses the flat tappet type cam/lifters. That way you don't have to worry about flat tappet cam and lifter break in and probably better off the shelf grinds available.

I'll help further. 1st check and make sure you have a 302 because some 4.2s did come with the '82 GTs. you can check the head casting #'s the 4.2 has E0SE-AB and the 302 has D9AE-AA in them. Teh 302 heads are pretty equal to the E7 heads on the later 302s also keep in mind that you do not have a roller cam or roller block.
to add some decent HP I would really, really think intake/carb and a cam. i then would add some headers and down the line think of running duals. Any good dual plane intake ie: Edelbrock performer/rpm and Weiand stealth come to mind.
Any good 570-600cfm carb with vacuum secondaries will be perfect for a mild motor. A 570-600 like I stated from Holley, edelbrock will be fine no need for anything fancy or expensive.
take a look at the edelbrock performer cam and also the rpm cam.
here is some specs on the rpm cam
