I've been plagued with rattling calipers. The darn things clatter when going over cracks/bumps.I've had the car about 3 months now and it's driving me crazy (yeah, yeah...short trip). My manual (Clymer) doesnt indicate any insulator on the out-board half of the caliper, only the inside half. Locators are tight. I replaced the M/C because it was toast; leaking.
Front pads (ceramic) and rotors (slotted) were replaced shortly before I acquired the vehicle.
Questions are:
1. Do your calipers rattle? Is this a problem (chronic) with Foxes? (got a 68 mustang with 69 cougar disc set up on it that's tighter.)

2: Could my locating pins/bolts be worn? (stops fine, good pedal pressure)

3: I worry too much about such things?

Thanks in advance :worship:

Could be worn pins, just get some new ones, they are not very expensive! Dont forget to lub them up too!

Also get a set of SS bushings from Steeda or some other source.

And no you aren't worrying to much about things, It just doesn't engender security when your trying to haul your butt down from triple digit speeds and the front end feels like its trying to rattle off.

Are these to replace the plastic sleeve?
Or is there something I'm missing?
* I neglected to mention these are hex head locators.

How do you know the calipers are causing the noise you hear? I can't imagine how this would be possible. Have you inspected the calipers to see if they are loose?

Driving with the top down it is relatively easy to hear them rattle. When I lightly touch the pedal, the rattle ceases because very slight pressure is put on the pad.

Yes. When I replaced the M/C I had to bleed the system. The locators are tight. I can slightly wiggle the caliper by hand. Tapping the rotor with a rubber mallet, I can repeat the chatter/rattle. At first I suspected a cracked pad, but that didnt pan out.

I can't imagine how this would be possible.
Neither can I. Thats why I asked.... :bang: Since it is occurring on both sides, I have nothing to compare to. Unless the PO.........nah, he's too much of a mechanically **** type guy to mess 'sumpin up.

Yeah, the plastic bushings in a word - stink!, stainless steel bushings are much better.

Considering the PTT function of this board, I thought I'd bring the post up to speed  .

I went ahead and replaced the calipers and locators a few weekends ago. The locators/pins had probably 17 years worth of wear, as well as the calipers themselves. The rubber insulators were pretty much toast.
Chatter/rattle all gone now.

I decided to hold off on the stainless bushings/insulators from Steeda until I get a REAL order of parts to place.....

:worship: Thanks to all who helped troubleshoot.

Ah, glad to hear that. I'll have to take a more careful look at mine.
