Block size?

I want to buy a block and it comes from a 95. I'm told the block is a 302. Where are the cast numbers on the block that say 302 or 281/289. 95 was the last year of the 302 block and I just want to make sure it's a 5.0 and not 4.6

There's no mistaking a 5.0 from a 4.6. With that being said without knowing casting numbers, make sure it's a roller lifter block and that should at least let you know that it's early 90's. Skunk should chime in soon with all the info you need though. Dude is fox encyclopedia.

Like Al stated you will not mistake a 302 from the 4.6. That being said the block casting #'s are located on the right hand side of the motor at the starter location. A 1990 and up block will start with an "F" and they all have a 6015 in it ( 6015 is the basic part # for an engine block). post the casting number and I'll do my best to decode it.

95 was the last year for the 302 in a Mustang but not the last year of the 302. They still made them until 2001 model year in Explorers. And like Al said, there's no way to mistake a 5.0 with a 4.6, the 4.6 is an over head cam engine.

I haven't bought the block yet I just wanted to have an idea. Due to 4.6 being over head cam, the area where the heads go are more round/curved were 5.0s are flat right?

Well, the 4.6 doesn't have a lifter valley where the push rods come up to the heads, or a place in the block for the cam to go. And the 4.6 is about as wide as Kim Kardashian's **** compared to the 5.0

This is a 4 valve 4.6 next to a 5.0, but you get the idea....

If you can see the lifters and it has a camshaft in the center, its not a 4.6.
