Doubt Ford ever used "SS" to denote any high-performance variant Mustang - since the "SS" designation is associated with Chevrolet.

I personally think it's a load of crap. The buck tag on the car says "GT" and you can just barely see the start of those letters in his picture. I know a lot of guys in the business even longer than myself and they too don't buy it and never heard of it. It makes absolutely no sense why Ford would even consider using "SS" when Chevy had used it so much.

Ford DID use the "SS" designation very breifly on a Ford Escort which is why there is a Ford part number for an "SS" nameplate but that was never used on the Mustang.

Granted I could be proven wrong but I would rather stay on the side of realistic caution on this one.....it would take some certified Ford documentation to prove this and I don't think anyone has it.

Besides...if this guys story is true and he worked for Ford and swapped this stuff out as he says, why would he not save some of that documentation over the years rather than throw it away? It just doesn't add up.

Look at the SS emblems. Anyone notice something about them? They're straight off of a chevelle SS and impala SS. They come seperate. Whoever put this car together just wanted to be a smart ***.

Those 69's seem more rounded. The ones on the car remind me more of a Camaro SS emblem..

It is one heck of a story but with no documentation....This has been discussed at length over on Four Eyed Pride. IF it were a true story then this particular car was produced too late in the production year to even remotely be a real one according to the story...if all true. the dash emblem is the Escort emblem and the one on the hatch looks like it's home made from something else.

IIRC the 'Standard Catalog of Ford' you can buy at most book stores mentions that the 82 Mustang GT was initially going to be called the Mustang SS instead.

EDIT: And in fact the excerpt detailing this account of SS production you can see on his listing is from the 'SCOF'. How accurate is it? I don't know either way. But this guy has nothing compelling to lend validity to the notion that the SS was ever actually produced even if it was intially planned. Or that his is a real SS assuming that it was actually produced. And of course documentation is what it's all about as Paul said above.

Paul,

I worked at a Ford dealer in Bessemer, Al. from 1979 to 1995, part time.

Yes there was mention of Ford going to use the SS name, the above post is correct, in that it is documented in that publication.

However, the badge shown on the car is not the correct "type".

That badge on the rear hatch is either Chevy of aftermarket add-on (stick-on) type from Autozone, etc.

It is not the original factory badge, and yes the dash badge is from an
Escort.
