79-81 turbo four questions

79-81 turbo four questions

I have been reading into the foxbody history and came across this little gem why where these engine so unreliable?

Really bad design. The turbo was located on the intake side. The exhaust exited the manifold, ran under the engine to the turbo. Mucho lag. There was a pre-converter in front of the turbo, which would break apart around 60k miles and destroy the turbo. They also had a tendency to catch fire.

Holy **** lol no wonder everybody has a blind eye to them I heard they leaked oil like a drain

They were bad. Many turbo installs back then weren't great, even by manufacturers. Lots of lessons learned about how you had to build the motors for turbos, which in the late 70's/early 80's they weren't doing. You couldn't just strap one on and not expect a meltdown.
