My question is... I have a 88 GT automatic. Its totatly rebuilt with a shift kit. Do I still need the 4:10's or will it be enough to have that and than a set of 3:73's ? Im not worried about gas. If the 4:10's are going to be worth it than I will sacrifice the gas for pleasure. Thank you in advance.

Personally, I think 3.73s are fine for Fox body cars. 4.10 seem to be optimal for SN-95 cars from what I have heard. It all depends though on what you want to do with the car.

I agree with Rob. I had an '86 Capri with a B&M shift kit, and 3.73 gears, and loved it. I frequented the interstates as well, and had no problems/issues with MPG, etc. (In fact, I think I averaged ~22-24mpg when traveling.)

i personally would go with a set of 3.73:1 gears. 4.10:1 is a little tall for me.

lol its a little bit of being led foot itis... and also having a tranny that wont go into overdrive and a mixture of my timing be realllly off... I delt with that so I dont think that ANY gear ration will bother me with gas

4:10 gears or even 4:30 gears with a slushbox (dog-o-matic) But if you have a manual transmission go with 3:73 (you are better off with a Tremec TKO)

it is a tranny that is sloppy (automatic tranny) cuz the AOD (DOG) is sloppy, slow, and power robbing. Just a term given to junk.

That's funny....I had an Art Carr prepped AOD that would outperform any 5 speed around

Just because a transmission is an automatic doesn't make it bad....a properly built transmission will perform well

Yes an auto will rob more power than a manual but I still made 413 RWHP and 494 Ft lbs of torque through that AOD with nothing exotic

Some autos are nice, some stink! I hate the stock AOD and AOD-E, The only auto tranny I would use is a pure race one (custom built) or a C-4 witha shift kita dn 2800 stall converter and a strong valve body. The AOD and AODE is too heavy too. The World Class T-5 is awesome and so is the G-Force T-56.

lol thanks for explaining the term 'slushbox' to me. i guess you learn something new everyday. i am satisfied with my trans though... i just had it rebuilt w/ a 2800 stc and shift kit. with the 4:10's im pretty satisfied. but I think I am going to sell it and get a street/strip c4.

If you do that, I would switch to the 3.73's. You'll lose overdrive and MPG will suffer greatly.

No problem. that set-up sounds good. I know i sounded harsh with the slushbox explanation but the ONLY auto I would buy is a C-4 or a Prepped 4R70W. C4 with a 2800 stall and a shift kit would be good. IMO.......I hope all goes well

To solve that common overdrive negative shift, you should install a super servo, it helps a lot. Even a "A" servo would do good, that's if you have the smaller "A-" stock servo. I'm not took good on the gear thing though, I still have my stock ones

Here's some of the things I've done.

i personally would go with 373 because 410's are gonna kill your gas milage and if u decide to supercharge your car your going to be slipping tires in 1st 2nd and 3rd with 410's
