Why? Is it because its rare? There were more powerfull muscle cars, such as Mopar's 426 Hemi, but they're not as expensive as Shelby Mustangs. Next to Charger Daytona and Superbird, Shelby Mustang is most expensive muscle car.
Carroll Shelby is an American ICON! He took a rather plain (secretary's car) and made a true road racing machine that would run with and often beat the big boys. Classic styling, modified engine and affordability. Need I say more.
Supply and demand. They are in demand and there aren't that many of them.
Is a top of the line hemi less expensive than a shelby? I'm not sure.
I do know that if you get into superbirds with daytona noses and hemis, you are talking some SERIOUS jingle.
I have to agree with the "Look Cool" answer as well as Shelby's larger-than-life status. He's always been sort of a maveric and that flew/flies in the face of the status quo. (As a friend of mine put it, he's a Texan, through and through.)

all i can say is GONE IN 60 SECONDS. before that movie they didnt go 4 near as much as they have now.before that u could actually buy a project car that was a shelby 4 a good price.now days u cant find em.another thing is u cant find a good 65-67 fastback 4 good money.most ppl on ebay call the fastbacks "a good eleanor clone"..........I HATE ELEANORS NOW. WAY 2 MANY OF EM.
Not to be morbid, but you think Sheblys are expensive now? Wait until Shelby passes away and you'll see them SKYROCKET.
I still have pipedreams of finding the legendary "Cobra in the Barn" and being able to buy it for $500.

As far as Hemi's go, they out price Shelby's already. You have to consider it's not only about the power of the car. As noted above take into accounts all the SCCA wins and the Trans Am victories. These cars are not like Chargers or Superbee's because they were outsourced to a race car builder for tweeking. Comparable to Yenko Camaros and such.
Couple that with the numbers of supply and demand. NOW throw that darn GISS movie and you get prices where they are.
Look at prices of straight up Mustangs against Camaros. Chevy parts are more abundant but more expensive so rebuild costs are outrageous

You can't judge everyday prices by the B-J auction. It's filled with rich men in the middle of their mid-life crisis who jack the prices to unreal amounts. Ridiculous.
I used to feel the same as most of you, that Shelby was "IT". That is until I learned better. It's just a regular old Mustang with that money grubbers name on it. I'd much rather spend half as much on twice the car, such as GT350Clone's 65.

I don't consider the R model or the Daytona in what I said. Those are a race car and the other isn't a mustang. This a report from last years BJ auction :
In the 2004 Auction, Barrett-Jackson consigned the largest selection of Hemi-powered vehicles ever offered at one auction. As the value of collectible muscle cars continues to trend upwards, the twelve Hemi-powered cars consigned included some of the most unique vehicles ever manufactured. The famed Hemi 426 cu.in/425 hp engine is widely regarded as the most famous of all engines in the automotive world.
The record-breaking muscle cars, all of which were offered at No Reserve, included the following examples:
1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Coupe sold for $216,000
1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird 2 Door Hardtop sold for $194,400
1970 Dodge Charger R/T Hemi Coupe sold for $170,100
1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda 2-Door Hardtop sold for $159,300
1969 Chevrolet Camaro Copo RS Coupe sold for $142,560
1967 Plymouth Hemi Satellite Convertible sold for $135,000
1969 Plymouth Hemi Roadrunner 2 Door Hardtop sold for $105,300
While I agree the BJ auction isn't indicative of the real world, this is the platform you used to compare.

On one web-site, few times I followed prices of expensive muscle cars.
For example, 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 goes for little over $100,000. And 1969 Dodge Charger 426 Hemi goes for about $80,000. 1970 Dodge Challenger can be found in $40,000 range (non Hemi), 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle 454 can be found in $50,000 range.

[/b][/quote]But aren't those cars you quote--the R's and the Daytonas--in the single digit range for production numbers? One of those Shelby Daytonas is around Baton Rouge, I'm told. . . .
