Transmission '65

I have a 65 mustang while driving it just quit on me. I just changed my starter yesterday. And a bunch of fluid leaked out onto the tow truck, maybe transmission fluid?

Anyone have any ideas where to start?

Is there any chance you dislodged the fill tube for the trans while you had the starter out? One if the bolts for the starter secures the full tube.

I'll check that first and let you know if it works. Thanks.

No it's not going yet. Still looking for a leak. This car is new to me sorry guys I might sound dumb. Looking at the engine from the grill the stick on the left (attached to the starter) says something about adding oil at a certain level. But there is also a stick that says nothing on the right by my oil filter. I assume the left is for my oil then so is the right for my transmission? Their both full.

I believe this is where the fluid drained from. It's where the shaft from the transmission meets with the back axle.

Sorry I'm not positive on all the technical terms.

Ok I guess my picture isn't showing. There is oily sludge in the bottom of my bell housing. Someone told me that means my torque converter is bad..?

Wouldn't the torque converter keep it from starting?

Not sure what the original wheels were. The guy I got it from spray painted them black...

When you turn the key, does the starter do anything? Gotta troubleshoot this thing from "ground zero".

Please don't take this the wrong way but you seem to have zero car knowledge. Is there a reputable garage that you could take your car to?

You are asking about the transmission and posting pics of the rearend.

I posted the picture because that is the area where the fluid was that leaked out. I know what the transmission is. I'm on here to get help learning not to be bashed for not knowing.

Anyways the starter tries to turn over and that's it.

lets start again ... you said it quit on you .. a starter wont make it quit on you .. a starter simply starts it up .. i assume you have a 6 cylinder engine .. i dont understand what you mean by the starter trying to turn it over .. will the engine spin over freely when you engage the starter .. if not you have a cranking problem now on top of a quitting problem .. if it will spin freely and not run then you have running problem .. you need to determine if the problem is in the electronics or the fuel ..

My engine is a 200 straight 6. I replaced the starter and it worked fine for about 10 minutes and then just completely shut down on me.

I don't see anything spin when I try to start the car. But I hear something spinning. I assumed it was the starter.

So when you turn the key to start something sounds like it is spinning but the engine doesn't turn over? It sounds the the starter could be spinning but not engaging the flywheel. That still doesn't explain why it died on you though. Fortunately it's easy to get the starter back out on a 6. I would take it back where you bought it and ask them to check it on the bench. The gear on the starter should pop out so it can engage the ring gear on the flex plate attached to the torque converter.
Try not to be offended by the suggestion to take it to a shop. Crisis time is not always the best time to learn. I have seen people spend a lot more money than they needed to trying to fix something like this.
Keep us posted.

I called a shop and they said have the starter checked. On my way to do that now. If I can get it started then I'm gonna take it in and have it inspected.

Starter is still good. Now I'm getting the alternator checked tomorrow.
