OK, this is my first post here. I Like the site and get lots of info here.

My question is related to the stereo relocation using the detachable face stereos.

like was done here

(took this off the previous post where I learned of the mod.)

I am planning this on my 65 coupe, but I wonder if these new motorized faces that fold down to access the cd player can be done this way as well?

Specifically I am looking at this unit
Pioneer DEH-P4700MP

notice that it only has 6 prongs. so wiring should be a snap, but I am concerned over the motorized faceplate issue. Anyone tackle this problem yet. Seems the older style snap off faces would be less problematic.

Second, what cables are people using to connect these, or are you fabricating your own? Someone mentioned old cellphone cables but I'm not sure I understand what that is.

Any help to a new member would be greatly appreciated. I'm holding off on the purchase until I get an answer one way or the other.

thanks

Shawn

That's my picture and post you're referring to, so I'll try to help as much as I can. I also looked at the flipdown faceplates, and didn't think they'd work. I looked for a stereo that had a simple removable faceplate, and an eject button on the head unit itself. I pulled the cover off of the headunit, and found where the contacts were for the faceplate, and soldered my own cable to it. I soldered the other end to the faceplate. By doing so, you've fooled the unit into thinking the faceplate is attached to the headunit. It all worked great. It played the stereo, it played a cd, but when I hit the eject button on the headunit, it failed to eject my cd. I realized that the headunit thinks the faceplate is still attached and can't possibly eject the cd. So I located the power wire to the faceplate and placed a red pushbutton switch in line with that. Now I can temporarily disrupt power to the faceplate, eject the cd, and restore functionality to the faceplate.

The unit I found is a Blaupunkt MP3000. They were selling on eBay a few years back for just over $100.

3 years later, it all still works like a charm.
