Replacing air filter question

Would it hurt to replace the air filter and oil cap with one that does not have the hose going between them? What does the hose do? Thanks in advance! 65 6 cylinder 200. Auto

The hose between the oil fill cap and the air cleaner is an early emissions control mechanism. The action of the engine builds up an oily mist that will be vented out into the atmosphere (filtered through the cap) if there is no hose to the air cleaner. With the hose in place, that oily air is included in the fuel/air charge through the carb to the cylinders and gets burned off. Thus much less pollution is generated. The PCV valve on the other side does the same thing to return the oily air to the spacer below the carb.

Early sixties engines (before pollution control) actually had a vent tube at the rear of the engine that dumped the mist into the outside air, below and behind the engine!

Unless you live in California (or another hard pollution control state), the choice is up to you.
