Question regarding cost of paying someone to do interior work

I have a '68 Mustang project car. It's going to a relatively low budget project. This won't be an award-winning show car, but I'd lime it to be a respectable looking weekend car. Due to my limited budget, I'm going to have to do a lot myself. The interior needs to be COMPLETELY restored.

I found some packages that include seat covers, door panels, carpet, dash pad, headliner, etc. Also, I'm going to need to repaint the metal part of the dash and doors, replace the gauges and plastic parts of the dash (due to aging) and might have to replace the steering column (it's loose).

Has anyone hired someone else to redo their interior? If so, any ideas what a general cost would be? This will be one of the more time-consuming parts of the project, so if I could save myself weeks of time by paying someone a reasonable/affordable fee, I'd do it.

Interior shops would be your best bet. I tried to do a seat cover myself, but after 8 hours of struggle I got the seat cover on, but the seat wouldn't lean back correctly, so I ended up having a local shop redo it while they were redoing my engine. If nothing else, you should probably consider having a interior shop redo your seats. You could just drop them off.

I'm not sure of the cost that I paid for just the interior work since I had some much done at one time. Maybe 3k? which included new carpet seat covers, and new dash pad. Looked great when they were done!

An Interior shop might be cheaper then that. Check around, ask if they have worked on old Mustangs before.

Thanks for the response. If it were anywhere close to $3,000, I'd have to attempt it myself. I was hoping it could be done for around $1,000-1,500 range. Maybe I'm not being realistic.

No, you maybe could get something in that price range. I would have the seats at least done at an interior shop. The rest I think you do yourself. Kind of a hybraid approach, maybe save some $$$

Not a bad idea. If you were me, would you bring the old seats, along with new seat covers and foam, to the shop or would you just bring the old seats and have them use their materials? I'm thinking it would be cheaper if I supply everything to them, especially since I'm planning on buying that interior "kit".

Yeah, it might be cheaper that way. I also put in new burlap for the seat bottoms. NDP sells it, and it's what they used on seats from the factory.

The seats just unbolt from four bolts per seat in the floor boards. Pretty easy to get out.

Burlap? Where is that used? Granted I haven't started on the car yet, but i've never heard that there is burlap used in the seats.

Are you guys estimating 3k for just the install of the interior or is that the price of materials and labor? I would think if you were to buy a complete kit from one of the many Mustang shops, that the cost to have the interior would be much cheaper?

Yes, that's what I did.

Burlap is used in the bottom of the seats, under the springs. At least that's the way they came from the factory in 65.
