I will use this car pretty much as a daily driver, but only like 4-5k miles a year.
How much should I spend on a paint job, and is it worth the trouble for me to strip the car before handing it over to the painter?

 

anything you do will lessen the price--trim removal, stripping and such. IF you strip it, ask the painter how he does it so you can do it the same way. (You don't want him trying something new on YOUR car.)

As for paint, it comes down to how much do you want to spend. A QUART of paint for a back valance panel on the GT cost me almost $60, so you can imagine what just paint can cost.

Decide what you can/want/will spend and move from there.

When we painted our 65 years ago, my Dad and I stripped it, sanded it and helped tape it to get the price down.

Find a painter that you trust and that you can see his/her work. A good source of this info is the local clubs. I've also had great luck with the Street Rod Guys. If they are in your town, ask them. Most of those guys are lifetime locals and know all of the good body men, painters, glass men and such. I found great mechanics that I never would have found without my streetrodding neighbor, Wolfman.

I'm not much help, but this isn't a place to rush. Take your time and find someone good. Ask questions. Lots and lots of questions.

 

You CAN actually get a somewhat decent paint job from Maaco or Earl Scheib if you do the prep work and remove anything that you don't want over spray on.

 

i just had mine repainted. It costs an arm & a leg, but I did go to someone who is familiar with painting classic cars (especially mustangs). It took awhile to do, but it was worth it.

Compare to Maaco? You can get one there for under $1000. Guess it depends on how particular you are about the final product. When mine is done, I'll have about $500 in it (material only).

 

I would say it would probably cost 4-6k for a decent job. 8-10k if you need a lot of body work and want a really nice job.

 

From my experience, it is normal to pay 6K for a paint job and it goes up from there. I was recently quoted 10K for a daily driver quality from two good guys painters. Both said that you need to blast it in order to be guaranteed for the paint.

I am going to do it myself and will be blasting the car. I know that it will run me 2K for materials alone.

 

I'm using the PPG Omni line of products which are about half the price of the Deltron stuff. When I asked what the differences were I was told "the warranty". That's good except you have to be a certified PPG painter for them to honor that warranty. I've seen a job done with Omni products and it turned out excellent so I have no worries that the paint isn't as good.

I'd rather save that extra $1500 for materials and put it into other areas of the car.

what shape is the car in bullittman 68??could you post some pics?? as said, pricing depends on the amount of work needed to be done, but i now around here, paint alone for a car like that would run at least a grand, thats canadian remember. Also, what are yo putting on it for clear coat??

 

i had a show quality paint job done on my car and it cost me 3200 bucks. he cut me a deal since he really likes working on classic stangs. he has a 69 GT himself so that brought the price down even more. he has done about 3 or 4 other cars since mine got there and all of them were over 5 grand and needed less work than mine did. he also used my car as a filler car to work on when it was slow, that's the main reason it was so cheap.

Well, Black is the toughest to pull off, the body has to be super straight as every thing is highly noticable.

I suggest you look at the article about this in the new Mustang monthly issue. Basically it hints to the fact that the major difference between an $800 job and a 10k one is fit and finish, not the mastery of the artist himself. It's not the end all be all fo paint articles, but it brings up some very good points and info.

While I do not agree that just anyone can paint a car, if the fit is good, it does go a long way. If you take the extra time lets say to make every gap on your car as perfect as possible and then had macco paint it but you paid extra for say 5 coats of clear and did the color sanding yourself, you would likely end up with a very nice finish for what you actually paid. Good fit and color sanding can make average paint look great, but great paint on a poorly fit car with little or no clear and color sanding will come out looking worse than average.
