I think this forum might be able to answer my question better than the others. I have a newer Mustang but would like to get it repainted the same color. I know some of you have been through this with your classics and I would like your advice. Any tips? I keep thinking a custom/rod shop since they are usually more detailed. Is it true you can't get a car repainted to the quality of factory paint jobs? I'm going to be in the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area.

Well, for us classics types, most paint jobs are better than factory. The materials and procedures used 40 years ago are not nearly as good as current tech. For latemodel cars, the materials are much better, and the factory finish is considerably better. That said, a good aftermarket paint job can far exceed the quality of the factory job.

The problem you'll run into is most good shops are swamped with insurance work, and they're making a killing at it. They don't have time to deal with custom work for budget-concious consumers.

Not to say you won't find a shop, but don't look in the yellow pages. Ask around about custom work. Find a guy that does it out of his garage in the evenings. Then be patient with him.
