Is my ´68 a real GT?

Hi there, I was just wondering if my 1968 Fastback was infact a true GT.

It says that the 1968 GT Package had:

Heavy Duty Suspension
Stiffer front and rear springs
Larger front and rear shock absorbers
Larger diameter front stabilizer
Dual exhausts with chrome "quad" outlets
*GT "C" stipes
*GT pop-open gas vap
GT fender badges
F70-14 wide oval WSW tires
Slotted and painted 14-in Styled Steel wheels
with GT hubcaps and trim rings

Optional for these engines:
*Fog Lamps
All V8s except the 289-2V
NOTE: Chromed Styled Steel wheels optional,
still with GT hub caps. The 390-4V has that chrome
engine dress up kit.

My car has the following things:

- Dual exhausts with chrome "quad" outlets
- Slotted and painted 14-in Styled Steel wheels with GT hubcaps and trim rings
- GT "C" stripe
- GT pop-open gas vap
- GT fender badges
- Fog Lamps

Not really sure how to know a Heavy duty suspension from a normal one, Stiffer front and rear springs from a normal ones, Larger front and rear shock absorbers, or Larger diameter front stabilizer?

Is it true that I´ve heard, that they originally had front disc brakes?

I have a copy of my Marti Report, if my car is in fact a true GT car, would that say on the Report?

I looked at your exterior pics. It looks correct to me with the exception of the wheels which I assume were replacements for the originals. Do you have any interior pics?

the procrastinator 9/22/08 07:46 PM

Are those body colored exterior mirrors stock? If not, nice upgrade.:nice:

UnrealFord 9/22/08 08:37 PM

I dont believe its a GT, I believe GTs came with disc brakes..:dunno:

390 4spd 9/23/08 08:13 AM

Not all GT's came with disc brakes,,,,but the marti report would say "GT Equipment Group" if it was a real GT:shame: Sorry

svopaul 9/23/08 08:15 AM

Your car per the Marti Report is not a GT....and not all GT's came with Disc Brakes. I have a '68 GT Coupe and have the marti report for it....it reads "GT Equipment Group" but was a manual drum brake car...if it had Disc brakes then it would show "Power Front disc brakes" on the report.

Yes, when I bought the car it had the styled wheels with GT hubcaps.

Interior picture taken this summer...

I´m getting the feeling that my car isn´t a real GT :shame::crying:

svopaul 9/23/08 10:42 AM

Your Marti Report also states that the car came with wheel covers.....if it had been a GT then it would have listed Styled Steel wheels....Wheel covers are standard hubcaps and did not come on the GT models.

nice car.

i did not realize until a few months ago that they made fastbacks in a 6 cyl. i thought they were all 8 cyl cars, the car i am refering to was a 65 i believe.

here is a dumb question, first is my statment above correct and was there another option as a 8 cyl non gt?

svopaul 9/23/08 05:27 PM

It is a nice car....don't let the non GT factor disappoint you though....Fastbacks are tough to find and that is a nice one. This is a good example though of why it is good to have the Marti Reports...so many cars end up changed over the years that it's nice to have a historical record of what they came with from the factory. ;)

You could get any engine in any body style....so a 6 cylinder could and did come in fastbacks. Yes, you could get a V8 in a non GT. For example....I have a '67 Coupe that is a factory 390 Automatic car but it is not a GT...and in fact it is rarer because it is not a GT package car. My '68 Coupe is originally a black car, black vinyl roof and black interior...302 4V with drum brakes and it is a GT because they ordered the GT equipment group....back then you could get just about anything you wanted although you could not get the GT equipment group on a 6 cylinder car....but you could order deluxe interior on a 6 cylinder car. ;)

gotcha, these classic cars change so much over the decades that i never trust an ad when i see someone advertising it as an original or matching number car.

moli, that is a good looking fastback you have.

Great Looking Car

future9er24 9/25/08 08:54 PM

That is a GORGEOUS fastback

HOSS429 9/26/08 04:40 AM

i dont think iv`e ever seen one .. was there a 69 or 70 GT offered ??

ChrisM 9/26/08 09:20 AM

The last year the GT option was offered (in the 1st generation) was 1969.

future9er24 9/26/08 10:07 AM

They didn't make very many of them, since the Mach 1 was so much more popular. Thats what ultimately killed it

Deric 9/27/08 07:07 PM

My 68 fastback was a non GT V8 early with the 289 instead of the 302.

codeman94 9/29/08 09:15 PM

very nice car....dont sweat it.
