Mustang issues
Greetings all-
New member here- Robert Lent of Virginia. I recently bought a 1967 Mustang (289 V-8, 3 speed coupe) in decent shape, but in need of the full fluff. Rust issues, engine good, lots of little cosmetic work needed, etc.
Last week, I was driving and shifted into neutral to cruise into a stop on a side road. The car suddenly locked up and in neutral (parking brake naturally off) would not move at all. The tow truck driver used a bit of force and freed up the car so it moved in neutral again for get it on the flat bed.
I took it for a short run (a straight shot 1 block, turned around, then back) and the car was grinding, squeaking, and sounded pretty bad throughout the trip. Today, I put it in reverse to get it to flat ground and reverse was okay, but it had moments where it seemed to be grinding if there was stress possibly).
I lifted it up and checked the transmission fluid. It has the proper gear oil and the level is full. I also rotated the rear tires and the passenger side is completely free, the drivers side only turns a small amount and there is resistance to it.
My question is: what caused the lockup, is there major damage, and what is causing the rear drivers to be firm. I believe it has a limited slip differential, but couldn't tell as it was pretty damgerous to be under the car on a residential road with people flying up and down constantly.
Many thanks,
