Larger alternator for '66 289 coupe
Hey guys, I'm an S197 guy myself, but have a friend with a '66 289 Coupe. He says that he thinks he needs a larger alternator. His problem is that when the car is running with any electrical components on, and then the wipers are turned on that there is a noticeable drain in power.
He said that he once saw oh Horsepower TV or something of the sort, that there was a larger than stock alternator available for his model year. He couldn't remember any of the details though.
Anyone have any good advice I can give him on this.
Thanks

yeah...I think I need to go this route too. I have an ammeter in my car...and with every electrical device I turn on....lights, fan, wipers, heater, make that needle jump further and further to the left. draws a lot of power from my alternator.

No one in particular... just order a Summit Racing catalog, go to their website, or better yet, drive to ANY local car parts store (NAPA, Kragen/Checker/Shmucks, CarQuest, AutoZone, etc) and ask for alternators for 1st gen, small-block Mustangs.

Cool, thanks for the help.

Early Mustang stock alternator base rating was 38 amp, with options of 45, 55 and 60 amp.
Like StreetDemon, I went to a 100 amp one-wire 3G alternator on my '67 coupe. It really provides the power I wanted for direct headlamp lighting, horn activation and other various electrical options.
I went to eBay and did a search for: "mustang 3g alternator". That search will return a pile of alternators of varying size: 100 to 270 amp!
Here's a link to one example.

I bought one just like this. Good luck!
