INFO - Installing the LED tail lights on a 69/70 mach 1

Hey

its been a while since I have been here and seeing our economy going into the tank, I have decided to do as much of the work on my car myself as possible.

I purchased from Mustangs Unlimited the seq LED taillights for about 170 bucks ( just say under 200 ). First off, goto the manufacture ( google search hit it right away ) and download the updated PDF instructions - much better to follow then the little sheet that came with it.

being a newb at this work, it took me almost 4 hours to install the LED kit. The majority of the time was looking for the turn sequencer ... I have original books with my 69 but it covers more than mustangs so it got confusing where the sequencer was ( yea i know, listen to the clicker ). The books kept pointing to the rear of the car on the passenger side.

Its behind the radio on the passenger side - translation - more work than i expected and like some stupid joke, I ended up with two extra screws that I could not account for when I placed everything back ... everything seems solid and I took it for a good hard drive so I know everything is okay. If you activate your turn signal, it clicks but as it clicks you can touch it and feel the clicker.

Installing the new sequencer is easy once you remove the radio, pop out the old one and place the new one in; I grounded it behind the glove box.

Forget the cool factor, this upgrade is a major safety bonus; the quality of the lights is almost a 10x improvement based on the videos I took. And yea the sequential turning is kinda neat.

I am guessing the 1970 maybe similar but my work was on a 69. I probably saved 200 bucks of labor cost on a Saturday afternoon.

Hope this helps anyone else installing one of these.

Thank you for the information. I think I am going to do the same to my 70' Mach 1. Can you see them flashing well in the sunlight? Do you think it was money well spent?

oh yes, its a big improvement in the daylight, plus you are getting three lights - one per cover - per left and right side ... instead of the single bulb.

oh, since yours is a 1970, if you buy the 69/70 kit, you will need to cut a small part of the template holding the LED lights, on the 1970 its smaller. You will see printed on the template ... cut here if 1970 ... just like a hobby store model.

I am in the middle of my 1970 Mach 1 restoration right now, so I added the taillights to my ever growing list of must have new parts. N8rfastback, I live right near you, so maybe I will run into you at a show and shine when I get the car done. But if I keep progressing on the restoration at this same pace, I will be done sometime around 2015.
