How much can a carb "pull" air compared to an FI setup? I'm wondering about using cone style filters with carbs. Can something like this work:

Obviously it's designed for forced induction but can an elbow be setup with a nice feeder pipe and a cone filter? Will it cut performance in a big way?

yes it should work just fine, it may however act somewhat like a ram tube, and may change the power curve some, usually this only applies to the intake manifold itself but i can see where it could have an effect since you are basically adding another plenum for the air, may or may not have any effect at all never tried and never even thought of it until now. if it does act like a plenum it could be a pretty cool tuning aid, providing it it's not hampering performance, but it will definately change the airflow characteristics of the engine
