How much can you squeeze out of a 289
I was wondering what everyone thought about how much horsepower you can squeeze out of a 289. I am just asking to see what everyone thinks. I heard the people over at Edelbrock got 654h.p. and 508 ft lb of torque. Any and all answers are well received.
I don't doubt they got that much, or close to it, but I highly doubt it's very streetable that way.
I think 350hp is probably a good target for 289 with all the go-fast goodies and still be reliable and well-mannered.

If you're lookin' for a motor to punch out big numbers get an FE block, but a 289 is cheaper to modify but can't put out the torque of an FE. 350 horsepower is a good number i think if you want a car with a "few" street manners.

~350 sounds good to me. im sure you can do that with not too much trouble

erhm... an FE block would take a bit of work to wedge into a '65. and would you really want all that weight in the nose?

But an FE would get more horsepower and torque out
it would. and they totally rock, its just not something everything can do :P
and for the record, thats a 427W smallblock in the linky you posted. but i have seen a few SOHC 427s in 65s.
those things sound soooo cool! i saw one in person once... he showed up late to the show, just so we could hear the thing

ok, I'm confused. Let me start from the beginning. I have a '69 fastback that I'm in the process of restoring. It originally came with a 302, which I still have. I also have a 390 FE laying around. Thirdly, I REALLY LIKE the thought of the 427W.
Some folks say the FE isnt worth the price in buildup for the gains you get out of it. What say you guys? Also what are the approx max HP/TQ ratings for each (302, 390, 427w) based on a mild build up (aftermarket heads, intake, high cfm carb, cams, etc. )
I had really wanted to build up the 390, but a supercharger may be in the future and i havent found one for the BB.

I'd say that this is a question best left for it's own thread, but I personally would build a stroked 351W. Sure the big blocks can make torque easy, but they don't call the 390 the "boat anchor" for nothing. Don't get me wrong, I'd drive/own a factory 390 car in a heartbeat, but if I was building my own car, that's not the direction I'd go for several reasons. (parts/weight/etc.)

Didn't mean to hijack the thread, but thanks for everyone's input. Time to start saving for this:

Back to the thread, how much can you get out of a 289? or a 302 for that matter?
