Help Identifying Mustang
Hello,
I am trying to glean as much information on the Mustang my Grandfather used to own. The only source of information I have is a singular photo and my grandmother. She had said it was a dark green 1966 mustang. After looking at the photo it seems it might actually be a 67 due to how the tailights look.
I do not know how much information can be gleaned just from a rear view, but any help would be appreciated. Also any good sources for finding this information myself.
My goal would to eventually acquire/restore
a mustang that is as similar as possible.
(The picture is attached)
Thank you

That Sure Looks Like a 67 Fastback Certainly Not a 66. The Finned Panel was 67 Only I Believe. An Expensive Car These Days! The Gas Cap Would Have Had a Clue To as If a GT or Not. The Sign Covers it. 68 Same Basic Car and Spendy as Well! It Has the Obligatory Add on Spring Shackles of the Day So Was Likely Raised in Rear For Bigger Tires and Probably a V8. Picture Quality & Size Really Limits Much other Observation. Watch The 68 Movie Bullitt if You Want to See One Reason Why this Style Car & Color is So Popular! Maybe Have Grandma Watch & See if It Jogs Her memory!

Yup, I think Kevin nailed it. I had a '67 with the finned (Or sometimes call "ribbed") tail light panel. Looked very similar to the modern photo Kevin posted. Looking at a zoomed version of that photo in the original post, I truly am not sure the back was the finned panel though or if it was just a black painted panel. Very hard to tell. I know many did paint their cars black around the tail lights to get that look. Just really hard to tell which it is.
Definitely not a 1966. Could be either a 1967 or 1968 model, but no other model year. Positive on that.

1965 and '66 models had the smaller convex tail lights. 1967 and '68 models had these concave-style tail lights. 1968 models (and some very late '67 builds) had the side marker lamps that had just been mandated by federal regulations.

*** One word of warning though on these 'oldies'. If you see one under $20k, don't even respond to the ad. It will need thousands and thousands of dollars to make it right. Hidden rust, all types of issues arise with these 55+ year old machines. Unless you can work on these old beasts yourself, you will need to lay out $25k minimum to get a proper V8 1967 Mustang. Even that is low priced. Don't jump into a sweet looking deal that will give you nightmares for years on end. Be careful and if you have never heard this phrase, look it up. Caveat Emptor.
