Hey everybody, I just picked up a 68 vert a little while back that belonged to my brother in law's brother. He had it for about 9 years and it's pretty nice but I intend to bring it all the WAY back. My question is that it has GT hubcaps on the steel wheels as well as the "duel/quad" exhaust coming out the back. I had read where you could get practically all GT stuff on the vert but I'm not convinced that this was stock with this car. The gas cap is not a GT cap. Also, it has a 302 engine 2 barrel where as the tag says it should have been a 289 but I have also read that the 302 replaced the 289 in 68. This was a July build so it's not like it's the beginning of the year. Would the 302 be correct for this car even though the tag says not and are the GT pieces just add ons. As the past owner got this at the Auburn auction 9 years ago, it's impossible to tell or ask that prior owner. Your help is appreciated.
Was 302 standard by July and no more 289's?
What about the GT packaging?

Thanks. Newbie to the Oldie.

Only two words will tell you for sure what the deal is on your car: KEVIN MARTI

Yeah, get a Marti report... even the basic report will tell you what your car started with. I believe the GT in 68 was only available as a 4bbl, either a 302 (J code) or a 390 (S code). 1967 was the only year that you could get a 2bbl with the GT equipment option.
The options you describe make the car look nicer (to at least the previous owner), but are easy to add on. If you are trying to restore the car back to what it came with from the factory, some of it will have to go (even the radial tires).

Are you talking about a July 68 or a July 69 build date? Somewhere around mid year 68 the supplies of 289s ran out and 302 2bbl engines became the base V8.

Thanks guys. I ended up ordering the kevin Marti book (by the numbers) and it did indeed say that they started to mingle the 302-2bl in with the 289's and often didn't change the vin from C to the 302 version. It doesn't truly answer if the engine was original so that is my next question, is there a way to determine if the engine is original? And I did order the marti report on this vehicle. Should be very interesting.
