Anybody have any new ideas on a better gascap for a 65/66 car???

I know about the satin-finish "restomod" caps with the various logos, as well as the Mach I-type flip ups, but I question how well the satin finish goes with a chrome bumper and chrome taillight bezels.

What about using something like the Bullitt or F150 cap? I know it COULD be done with some sheetmetal work, but since the car is painted, I don't want to do anything that requires paint work... Any good "bolt-in" ideas??? I don't mind cutting, drilling or adapting, but NO PAINT WORK! :nono:

How about this one, do you think it could be adapted?

I too wondered how a Bullitt door would look on the classics. I have one on my 96, and before installing it I did the hold-it-up-there-and-squint maneuver on the tail of the fastback, and the Bullitt door was way too large. I have heard rumblings from 2mff about fitting a latemodel Japanese sport bike fuel cap. Hit ebay or something and see what you can find.

Maybe something like this with a chrome finish:

Mach I... you guys have it easy since the panel is flat, 67/8 it gets tricky.

To me, the Mustang gas cap is one of the standout pieces on the car. I wouldn't change it at all.

Have you checked out Amanas website? How about GE or White Westhinghouse???? Maybe they'd have something...

Maybe someone has a chrome ice maker door or a lint trap door. Just a thought...

I bought a Bullit cap to try to fab it in, but they are too big. I purchased one of the billet caps (the one Stroked66 posted), but didn't like the way it looked on my car. Then I found a cap off of an 02 Honda sportbike. It will require drilling some holes and making a plate that mounts behind the panel. I've got it all designed on paper and was suppose to do it this spring/summer, but thanks to my hydraulic line problem I been swamped with replacing it and doing a bunch of "While I'm at its"

What´s the size of it? Too big for a ´67?

Here´s some flip open gas caps, might not be very safe mounted vertical, but I think they look cool.

I took a look a little bit outside the mainstream to find them. Links are under the pics.

I don't remember the exact dimensions, but I remember it pretty much taking up all the vertical space of the tail light panel, from the bottom of the trunk lid, to the top of the bumper. It's every bit of 6 inches wide (maybe a bit more), so it probably wouldn't work on a 67 either.

BobV, have you considered the 67-68 style shelby gas caps? get one of the gt350 caps and mount it in a 70 base. it would definately be rather unusual. i have never seen one at any of the car shows i been too. i have seen the 70 mach 1 flip open caps and they look pretty good as well as the 71-73 mach 1 caps as well. the 71-73 looks absolutely awesome but there are a lot of people starting to do that now, especially since the whole eleanor deal.

Hey!!! I came up with another idea for you. How about you go to your favorite bulk warehouse (Costco or Sam's) and buy a big ole jar of Smuckers Jelly and use the lid off of it???? Talk about modified... And what do you mean, we concours guys don't understand??? Gee, I've come up with some really unique modifications.

Well, maybe not this one....

(Editors Note: For those of you who don't know, Bob and I are pretty good friends and we just like to give each other a lot of guff.)

(Editors Note #2: The Smuckers Jelly lid is not a unique idea. Bob and I both know the car. It isn't a gas cap, it is on the wiper fluid reservior.)

LMAO at 67shelby. Yep, that Smucker's lid might be the ticket!

Hey wait, I think I just found a source for a 67 Shelby gas cap..........

It LOOKS to me that the 70 flip-cap is the same as the 67/68 cap except for the flat base. True?
Wonder if the "Shelby Cobra" insert that goes on the 67/68 cap would just stick right on a 70 cap??? 70 assemblies seem to go pretty cheap compared to the 71-73 caps, and the Shelby insert piece is available repro for <$10...

I've been using this 1970 pop-open for a couple years now. I removed the horse and filled the holes, and put on a current Cobra emblem. It took a little bending to make it fit properly, but it was well worth the effort. I think I paid about $35 for the cap (on eBay).

Well, there it is!

Add a little custom lettering.... Man, I'm really wishing I hadn't drilled the taillight panel to attach the GT350 emblem...

THANKS everybody!

That looks great Dan!

Does the lower lip over-hang the bevel at the bottom of the tail light panel? Hard to tell from the pic. Certainly doesn't mess up the look, I was just curious.
